Movie Reviews of Rocky BalboaMovie Review: What's wrong with one man standing toe to toe with another man and saying "I am"? Summary: 5 Stars
When I first saw news about this sequel, I thought...oh, no. As if Rocky V didn't do enough damage to the filmic legacy of this uniquely American character, here comes another car wreck. Well, it just goes to show you that you don't know how good or bad something is until it's finished and ready (with some notable exceptions, of course).
I'm not going to spoil any of the plot for you, I'm just going to say that if you love the character of Rocky Balboa, this is the fitting and just sendoff that his story demanded, and much better than could ever have been expected. Plus, the film's center has a surprisingly tender heart at its core with Stallone (who also wrote and directed the film) reminding us what a charismatic, charming on-screen persona he has. He should be proud of this last round for The Rock.
Hope you enjoy it as much the hooting, laughing and cheering audience did that I saw it in the theater with.
Movie Review: The Right Bookend Summary: 5 Stars
Rocky V was awful. I'm so glad Stallone wasn't satisfied with how he ended things. The new movie is the right bookend -- Stallone revisits the series' roots and finds the right tone.
Let me reveal my bias -- I loved the first movie. I watched it in theaters more than a dozen times. So let's not waste time with a real review. Let's talk nostalgia. "Rocky Balboa" ties back into every original subtext. Stallone reinforces his vision by recasting bit players like Pedro Lovell as Spider Rico (a great cameo).
The theme hasn't changed. Keep moving forward; don't quit. This time, Rocky is older and wiser. I loved the subtext of a wiser Rocky. I believed.
This is an emotionally satisfying movie. If you've followed the series, you've seen the ups and downs. This is the right way to end the series. Anything less would have been unfair to an original and compelling character.
Movie Review: Rocky Balboa and Ikiru Summary: 5 Stars
I saw Rocky Balboa several times now, in the theater, and twice again on DVD. I respect the film more every time I see it, and I thought I'd write something about it and send it along. Rocky Balboa reminds me a lot of Akira Kurosawa's Ikiru, one of my favorite films of all time. It's about one man overcoming his own sense of nostalgia, the negativity all around him, the false authority of bureaucracy, and finally finding peace within himself. The film depicts Rocky running up the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art in the snow, much as Kurosawa used the weather, and specifically a snow scene, to depict the moment when his main character finally gets in touch with himself in the present. I wonder how much of an influence Ikiru was on the film? Rocky Balboa is truly a masterpiece film, both for its screenplay and execution on film. It will stand the test of time as a classic, along with Rocky I.
Movie Review: Believe the hype Summary: 5 Stars
Even while this was in the theatres, reviews and critics were praising this movie. I, on the other hand, was afraid to believe the hype. Even after talking myself into renting this, it sat around the house for days because I still couldn't bring myself to believe that this film would actually be good. But boy am I glad I finally hit the play button. I had forgotten how much I enjoyed Rocky Balboa and it's strange how he feels like an old friend I haven't seen in a while. I'm impressed with Rocky's wisdom and understand his heartbreak over Adrian. Afterall, I've known her for thirty years too. In no time, I'm quite charmed by Rocky's humbleness and inspired by his unconquerable soul. The script is a bit laid back and not over the top like Rocky 2 thru 4. (I like to pretend that 5 never happened.) In short, this is a wonderful film about a remarkable character. You won't be disappointed.
Movie Review: Rocky Balboa - The Final Chapter Summary: 5 Stars
This movie is by far a better way to end the classic boxing franchise and a welcome return to form as well.
It's not the best in the series, it's entertaining and well acted however unlike some of the other Rocky movie (1,2+3) this one doesn't have, in my opinion, a bad guy whom you really want Rocky to beat. Apollo Creed was cocky but a good bad guy and Mr. T was just fantastic, great attitude, memorable quotes and believable character. In this one Mason 'The Line' Dixon is arrogant but I don't think to the point of abnoxiousness. Not enough of an error to take this film down a star or two.
Great ending, even though Rocky lost his final fight in a metaphorical way he kinda won. Think about it, Rocky will always be a winner to all of us.
