Movie Reviews of Rocky BalboaMovie Review: Much Better than I Expected and Definitely Worth Watching Summary: 5 Stars
I sort of lost track of the Rocky series after the first one--which I loved. I generally don't go for "franchise" movie sequels, but this movie totally took me by surprise--it was that good. My family has watched ROCKY BALBOA several times now and we like it better each time. We especially appreciated the commentary by Sylvester Stallone. The themes of the first ROCKY film are still there: don't let what others think or say about you deter you from what you know you are called to do, make the best of who you are and what you have (imperfect though that may be), treasure and support your friends, when you are going through tough times and loss let yourself feel what you are feeling, reach out to others even when you are hurting yourself, never give up, and so on--but there is a sensitivity and sweetness to this movie that I haven't seen in a film in a long, long time. ROCKY BALBOA is edifying and redemptive while not being preachy. It's the kind of movie you feel better after having seen it but, at the same time, you are thoroughly entertained.
Movie Review: The series now has closure. Summary: 5 Stars
The sixth installment of the Rocky series brought many questions to the floor when it was first announced. "Why are they doing this?", "Are they really going to have Rocky fight again?", and "What are they thinking?" were the reactions I heard and in some cases gave. I didn't see why it was necessary to make another movie... That was until I saw this film.
This movie truly gave closure to the series and was beautifully put together. I'm never one for spoilers, so you'll have to watch the movie, but I'm telling you, as a huge Rocky fan, this movie is worth it. All the "Why's", the "What for's", and the "This isn't necessary's" are put to rest as the movie comes to a close. It is a beautiful way to end it and I'm so glad they made this movie.
I was skeptical at first, but all of my concerns were put to rest by the film. If you've enjoyed the Rocky films and haven't seen this, it is a must, for it completes the story of the greatest underdog in the history of film. And it does it in a very magical way.
Movie Review: A Fitting Conclusion to the Rocky Saga Summary: 5 Stars
When Rocky started spinning off sequels I lost count of which ones I saw, but Rocky Balboa is a different story, and a fitting conclusion to the saga. What makes this one different is the soul of the story that seems nearer to the original film than any of the numbered serials. In a fantasy matchup, pundits predict how the current heavyweight champion would fare against the has-been Rocky. On a level playing field, the two would be well-matched. When Rocky entertains the idea of getting back into the ring, he contends with himself, more than everything else. Who is he doing it for? What is he trying to prove? Why does it matter?
What emerges is a touching story of man's triumph of self-respect. Stallone brings depth to a character who wants to carve out a legacy for himself, while coming to terms with the hopes, disapointments, and dreams of a lifetime. DVD includes outtakes and an alternate ending that works, but you realize the one they chose is fitting and gives resonance to a well-told conclusion to the Rocky saga.
Movie Review: A Good Movie Summary: 5 Stars
This movie wasn't bad. Sly is getting old; he had some fat on him in this film. It was said in the commentary that Sly wanted the boxing match to be realistic and not cinematic. That's why Mike Tyson was in the film. A couple of famous HBO Boxing Ring Announcers, such as Jim Lampley and Max Kellerman, hosted the fight.
It's too bad that Adrian was dead. Rocky and Paulie got in an arguement over Rocky's memories of love with Adrian. Rocky manages a restaurant call Adrian's. There's a sports cast comparing Rocky to the current champ Mason "The Line" Dixon. The movie basically gives a reason why the two should fight and the movie ends with a happy ending. Rocky tells the champ " It's not over until it's over." It's fun watching Rocky train and this time he lifts weights heavier than I've ever seen him lift before. At the end of the fight, Rocky was bloody and beat up and everyone was yelling "Rocky! Rocky! Rocky!" Fortunately Rocky didn't become champ again because he's too old but Rocky went the distance.
Movie Review: If you loved the original, then SEE THIS FILM! Summary: 5 Stars
This will be short: This film is only one micro-millimeter away from being just as good as the original "Rocky". It is poignant, well-written, very well acted, and, if you'll forgive the boxing terminology, it packs quite a punch.
Folks, when I first heard that Stallone was doing yet another "Rocky" sequel, my first response was, "He's GOT to be kidding, right???" I just couldn't believe it, and I thought that it was a sure sign that Stallone's career really was over. I was certainly sad to think that, because I've always been a big fan.
This is one of those very rare occasions that I was well and truly wrong about something. This is a very good film, and deserves to be given credit as being what it is: The best of the "Rocky" sequels. Stallone's writing and acting, as well as his direction of this film, haven't been this good in some time.
If you loved the original "Rocky", and you haven't already done so, SEE THIS FILM!
You'll thank me later.
