Movie Reviews of Rocky Balboa

Movie Review: I agree--the Best Rocky Movie Since the First
Summary: 5 Stars

I never saw Rocky VI in the theaters late last year, but learned about it through DVD. I have watched it over 8 times and I am just amazed by it and cannot believe it did not get the attention it deserved. I guess the only saving grace is that for the most part, critics understood the movie, and had a soft spot in their heart for it. Movies are to entertain but to some directors/actors, the goal is to make a difference, to make a point. The way Rocky handled himself through the movie, through the depths of despair, while also facing the reality of his own aging, Rocky shows us how to rise above it all "The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows" he says, "It's a very mean and nasty place... and I don't care how tough you are, it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently, if you let it. Not you, me or nobody, is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't about how hard you hit... It's about how hard you can get hit, and keep moving forward... it's about how much you can take, and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done. Now, if you know what you're worth, go out and get what your worth. But you gotta be willing to take the hits. And not pointing fingers saying: "You ain't what you wanna be because of him or her or anybody. Cowards do that and that ain't you! You're better than that!"

It is that single seen that allowed me to begin to deal with my own father's death and realize, "life sucks in so many ways, but fight it, don't let it knock you down, if you don't get up, life will keep you on the ground, permanently!

Bravo Rocky! Bravo Stallone! Thank you so much.

Movie Review: The sixth in the series is the BEST !
Summary: 5 Stars

I, like everybody else who heard the news of another Rocky film, shook my head and said "what's left to say?" Well, the early reviews came out and Sylvester Stallone did the expected promotional interviews. What I heard wetted my appetite. Stallone was not my favorite actor but when I saw him in a film I liked him. After renting this film the first comment I made to my wife was, "this is one of the most underrated actors in the history of Hollywood!" In this, the last of the series, we see for the first time an introspective and truly pained man in conflict with his past, his present and his future. Sylvester Stallone has crafted a real story, although stretching credibility at times, but revealing the inner thoughts and emotions of a plain average Joe. Stallone IS Rocky Balboa! Unlike several of the in between Rockys this one is, in my mind, the best of the series. You needn't have seen the first five to appreciate and understand this film. The acting throughout is first rate, the production values are great, the fighting choreography is superb and for once, he has a believable ring foe in Mason Dixon, unlike the Dolf Lundgrens and Mr. T's of the past.

Critics will continue to minimize the abilities and appeal of Sylvester Stallone but I put him in the same league as John Wayne who, depite every adversity that befell him, whether in World War II combat, fighting gunslingers in the old West or courting an Irish maiden in old Erin, never lost his moral compass and ultimately prevailed. I would definitely nominate ROCKY BALBOA as one of the best films of 2007.

Movie Review: What Rocky V should have been
Summary: 5 Stars

Sylvester Stallone makes his way back to the Rocky series to redeem himself after the travesty that was Rocky 5.

It's a swan song movie, more touching and slow-moving drama than the rest, but it still packs a punch.

The movie starts with Rocky several years after his boxing career has ended. He's living alone as a result of his wife's passing, and he uses his daily hours taking care of the needs of his restaurant, named in honor of his late wife. For Rocky, however, just getting by is not enough, just going through life is not enough. The fire still burns within.

He slowly lets the news leak out to his son and Paulie that he'd like to fight again. Neither seems to receptive. Hell, even the Boxing Commission is against it. But then a computer generated fight in which Rocky KOs the current heavyweight champion, Mason Dixon (played by real boxer Antonio Tarver), gets the wheels in motion for Rocky 5 (take two).

It's a joke of a fight, nobody expects Rocky to have a chance. Everyone is counting him out, even his family. Rocky still believes, and he proves his point, and his life's motto, by telling his son that life is not about how hard one can hit; but, instead, it's about how hard one can be hit, and keep moving forward.

The first half of the movie is a bit slow, building up the drama and tension. Eventually, however, the training montage takes place, and the actual fight ensues.

It ends exactly as the Rocky series should end: in the ring, with power, with dignity, and with a ton of body shots.

Movie Review: New respect for Stallone
Summary: 5 Stars

Despite an extraordinarely successful career, Stallone still has the fire in his belly to push himself beyond ordinary limits. He cleaned and overhead pressed over 300 pounds and that is not easy at his age. Or any age for that matter. The filming was good and the characters very human and credible. Especially Stallone's, considering the whole series is admittedly based on fiction. The fighting was real and Stallone clearly got himself back into very good shape.
I had no intention of seeing this movie because I figured the obvious. That Stallone must be banking on cashing in a few bucks with die hard Rocky fans. Then I read some reviews and decided to give it a chance. I'm glad I did.
I enjoyed the specials section as much as the movie. Stallone explained the background, logic and filming behind many of the scenes. Absent his noteable stage presence, his voice is pretty easy to listen to. He also seems quite thoughtful, intelligent, and down to earth when explaining the movie. Basically I got two movies for the price of one. But then I have grown more fond of thinking and less fond of action in my middle age.
Stallone has been such a great talent through the decades. Too bad so much was squandered on overly simplistic movies. A choice he seemed to almost deliberately make. I have read that he chose Cobra over Beverly Hills Cop? C'mon. Cobra is almost a cult classic but any film savvy person would see the very limited appeal (personally I'm the guy who has seen it four times).
Go Rocky go! I plan to see the next Rambo now.

Movie Review: A great ending to a great series
Summary: 5 Stars

I have watched Rocky since it first came out and I just love the guy! I almost got to see it when it first came out around Christmas, but opted to Dreamgirls and prayed to be one of the first to buy it when they released it on DVD, and sure enough, I was one of the first, I watched it tonight and wasn't disappointed; Watching Rocky at Adrian's grave was real touching; Bringing back Little Marie(now grown and in need of a little help)was a nice touch; Seeing Rocky moving on with his restaurant(lvoingly named after Adrian) and seeing Paulie again(who never disappoints us no matter what with his wisecracks and asides); and you got a good ending to a great set of movies; I'm like the promoter who wanted Rocky in Rocky 5, Rocky truly fought some wars in the ring, and in this film, he shows us that he still got some of it left in him; Only this time, he goes toe to toe with the Boxing Commission, for refusing to let him box even though he passed the tests and physicals; To bringing his family in line for this event, and most of all, bringing himself to the ring and fighting this young fella; he doesn't disappoint us. Personally, I thought after Rocky 5, it was OVER. even bought the Boxed 5 set; but I was a bit happy to see Rock come back like a phoenix in Rocky Balboa. He'll always be a favorite and hero of mine.
