Movie Reviews of Robin and MarianMovie Review: Where the arrow falls down, I will be buried with Marian! Summary: 5 Stars
Richard Lester will cross over the story as a fabulous storyteller: Petulia and Robin and Marian are without any shadow of doubt his supreme masterpieces.
This a captivating portrait of the famous archer and swashbuckler of Sherwood `s forests: Robin Hood in his golden ages. His well known discrepancies with Richard Lion heart and then his non return differences with his son "John without land."
The magnetic presence of Sean Connery, the dazzling beauty and grace of Audrey Hepburn, the colossal presence of Nigel Williamson, Robert Shaw, Ian Holm and Richard Harris plus the adorable landscapes make of this film one of the top ten love pictures ever made. From its immediate release was easy to foresee.
Acquire and treasure it. A must- see over and over.
Movie Review: A good ending Summary: 5 Stars
Other reviewers have taken issue with the ending of "Robin and Marian," calling it a "downer," etc. Although the end is not conventionally happy (a la Hollywood), it is perfectly consistent with the story line. In fact, to end any other way would have been to dilute the dramatic force of Marian's love for Robin. Although in this film the settings and music are a lovely bonus, it's obvious the script was written by a playwright who first uses plot, characterization and dialogue to provide the story's emotional impact. It also, by the way, depicts (albeit with a new twist) a scene from the Robin Hood storybook I read as a youngster; in it, Robin shoots an arrow into the air telling his friend to bury him where it lands. I don't remember thinking of that as a "downer" then; nor do I now.
Movie Review: Classic Connery Summary: 5 Stars
Several years past his last Eon James Bond film finds Sean Connery hitting his stride. This was one of several truly memorable period pieces in that year or two (which included THE MAN WHO WOULD BE KING and THE WIND AND THE LION). Great performances by Connery, Audrey Hepburn, Robert Shaw and Nicol Williamson. Also in a small part, Richard Harris as very mad Richard the Lionheart. A warm tale of love, aging with real chemistry between Connery and Hepburn. The end is a downer but it really had to be that way. No extras to speak of on this. One of Richard Lester's best films -- ranks with THREE & FOUR MUSKETEERS.
Movie Review: Connery deserved an Oscar for this one. Summary: 5 Stars
This was the first post-Bond Connery movie I saw and have always been impressed with his ability at portraying a dashing character forced to come to grips with his own mortality and vulnerability. Not to detract from his performance in "The Untouchables," I truly felt Connery deserved an award for "Robin & Marian" just as much or more than the award he won as Supporting Actor in that film. I have since seen some of Connery's other work from the early 70's, and was surprised by the range of his talent, particularly in "The Offence" and "The Man Who Would Be King." "Robin & Marian" is definitely worth a look.
Movie Review: A Lion in Sherwood Summary: 5 Stars
Robin and Marion screenplay by the late James Goldman, playwright/screenwriter of "Lion in Winter" with Katherine Hepburn, Peter O'Toole and Anthony Hopkins, and brother of William Goldman-"Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid", "Marathon Man", etc.
Somewhat, similar to "Lion in Winter", Robin and Marion is a tongue-in-cheek, parody of aging in Robin Hood's Sherwood Forest. Wonderful supporting cast (Robert Shaw, Richard Harris and Nicol Williamson) with an ensemble feel. Great fun, cynical, witty--a real treat from Sean Connery and Audrey Hepburn.
