Movie Reviews of Ripley's GameMovie Review: Perfect Fit: Malkovich as Tom Ripley. Summary: 5 Stars
...and like Lector, we need to see more of Ripley. Now here's a story you can get into. Is Ripley's game getting rid of the tasteless, crude European played with aplomb by Ray Winstone--who you see Malkovich's Ripley has great problems with as they run a game on an art deal in the beginning? Or is Ripley trying to gracefully get even for the dissing he got at his neighbor the leukemic picture framer's soiree? Tom Ripley has no taste? Indeed. That's akin to saying that all Americans are cowboys... Well, suffice it to say that Ripley and the European made an offer the picture framer could not refuse...a tidy sum and a second opinion given by some specialists in Berlin. The first offing goes pretty well, except for the blood stained glass at the natural museum....however, now the Russian Mafia will come after someone if another execution isn't done. The poor picture framer sees himself getting deeper and deeper and just as he's to do the second one, master improvisionist Ripley arrives. Then an odd fellowship develop between Ripley and the picture framer. And when the movie ends, you really aren't sure that Ripley has gained some type of redemption or not....but, he *does* end up getting away with murder, so to speak. Compared to Matt Damon's Ripley, both Damon and Malkovich are great at fleshing out this complex personality, but as it currently stands, I enjoyed Malkovich's rendition the most. Also see the movie Purple Noon in which Ripley seems to get caught...
Movie Review: Malcovitch is Ripley! Summary: 5 Stars
Malcovich was born to play this role as an older Tom Ripley. Now settled with his lovely wife in Belle Ombre, he's up to his old tricks and his connections with the seamy underworld of art forgery. Slighted by a neighbor, he plays a cruel cat and mouse game--how far will a decent person go? Like many of Highsmith's stories, it becomes a morality play--how much good is in the worst of us, how much evil in the best? Her stories are cruel, but with a touch of human nature and an ironic sense of humor running throughout. Though I loved the movie I wonder what a person not familiar with the Ripley books would make of it. Being a big fan of Highmith's works, I though the movie did the book justice, even though there were some small changes. (such as Reeves being portrayed much differently.)
Movie Review: It draws you in and becomes mesmerizing Summary: 5 Stars
What can I say but Malkovich??? A stellar performance by the man with beautiful lighting and direction as well. I, for one, could not stand The Talented Mr. Ripley with Matt Damon but this movie is great!!! Again, maybe it's my love for Malkovich as an actor but this movie is really good. My only wish is that there was a little less time drag between some sequences and instead included a little more storyline background. Otherwise, a fantastic film.
Movie Review: review of Ripley's Game Summary: 5 Stars
DVD arrived intact.Enjoyed the film as it is well casted. John Malcovich is a favorite actor as his humor is dry as well as laconic. His Ripley character is a control freak whose emotions are motion-less,where his acting counterpoint is a man who is very emotional, going thru levels of severe turmoil and stress.
The contrasts play well off each other.Setting/locale(Italy)is beautiful, and story elements are very entertaining. It is a B+ for me.
Movie Review: Deliciously Perverse Summary: 5 Stars
John Malcovich gives an impeccable performance as middleaged Ripley, playing a perverse game making it up as he goes. Ripley's lover is a beautiful world reknown harpshicord player, who is aware of Ripley's true nature and loves him anyway. Mostly out of boredom Ripley starts a subtle game in which he seduces a perfectly good man to murder, and then steps in to save him, striking an unusual partnership which ends under unusual circumstances.
