Movie Review: "Rio Grande"

This film marks the first of five films that John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara made together. Once John Ford got a somewhat reluctant Republic mogul Herbert Yates to agree to produce his long-time dream "The Quiet Man" - Yates added a "condition." That condition was that the same team, Maureen O'Hara, Duke Wayne, do a western film first, to make up for the money he anticipated 'losing' on "The Quiet Man." Yates must have had to eat a lot of crow because not only was "Rio Grande" a box office success, but "The Quiet Man" went on to become an all-time classic masterpiece. "Rio Grande" is an exceptionally wonderful film, and I feel is equal to "The Quiet Man" in it's own genre (Calvalry/western). It is romantic, sensitive, full of action, and everything you would expect from hero John Wayne...and his lovely lady, Maureen O'Hara - plus a happy ending.
This is a subject close to my heart because I maintain a website on Ms. O'Hara and have interviewed her, as well as many of her peers, including Harry Carey, Jr., Anna Lee and John Agar. The chemistry of O'Hara and Wayne in itself is an interesting study and long underrated by Hollywood historians....
Movie Review: One of the best

Although I am a devotee of all John Wayne movies, I think that this is my favourite of them all and certainly made me fall in love with 'the John Wayne character'. Seen in 2009, John Ford's treatment is sentimental and a little corny but has so much heart that it can only be viewed with indulgent affection. Maureen O'Hara is exquisite and John Wayne handsome and their chemistry is incredibly powerful - why did they only make 5 films together? To me, one of the most memorable scenes of any movie is a very simple, touching scene where an injured Kirby is being brought back with the rest of the patrol into the camp and at first Kathleen doesn't notice him as she is searching for their son. Having found the son and suddenly realising that her husband is lying hurt in front of her, she simply takes his hand and walks on in in silence in time with the travois - nothing needs to be said, the look and posture is enough. It is impossibly romantic and makes all other more obvious scenes pale into comparison. Rio Grande a lesser film? Never!Movie Review: Rio Grande: The start of a great pairing

Rio Grande was conceived as a movie to pay for the making of another film. John Ford wanted to make a little film called "The Quiet Man" but Columbia Studios wanted a quick money maker to pay for the next production. The result was "Rio Grande." A classic in its own right, one that should not be missed. Directed by John Ford and starring Maureen O'Hara and John Wayne together for the first time. The story is what hyou should expect from Ford, good action and get characters. Look for many familar faces in this film, like Victor MacLagen, Chill Wills, Ben Johnson and Harry Carey Jr. This film is part of the fabled cavalry trilogy. It is rousing and exciting. I'd say 4-1/2 stars. Why? I watched the "trilogy" one after the other and by now a bit of surrealism had taken over. That's to director John Ford's advantage. (Ever notice there aren't many closeups in this movie?) Of the 3, this has the slightest story, but let's not quibble; John Wayne, Maureen O'Hara, Victor McLaglen, Ben Johnson are all here in their inimitable glory. As is Monument Valley. Another one of my favorite movies with John Wayne and the whole John Ford crew.
The scene where Ben Johnson, Harry Carey Jr., and Claude Jarman Jr. ride two Horses Roman style (that's standing on the two horse's backs) was actually done by them, not stuntmen! They just don't make them like that anymore.
