Movie Reviews of Ride with the Devil

Movie Review: Darn good film!
Summary: 5 Stars

Darn good film!! I've written two screenplays inside this historical universe so I've done a ton of research into this time period and specifically Quantrill's Raiders. This film does a great job of depicting the confusion of the era and the impulse driven events of the bushwackers. I do very much wish Ang Lee would have shown the Kansas City 3 story jailhouse being pulled down with the raiders' womenfolk inside rather than just telling us. That is what the passion that pushed the raiders to destroy Lawrence, Ks was about. It was also what turned William Anderson into the vengeful 'Bloody Bill' Anderson which was depicted as 'Black John' by Jim Caveaseal. The ommission of the brutality of that one event skews the balanced in my estimation. Anyway, it plays to good effect even if slanted North. Well written, well shot, well acted and brilliantly directed by the always wonderful Ang Lee. Tobey McGuire is at his best. He really shines in this picture.

Movie Review: A great movie
Summary: 5 Stars

Nothing illustrates the decay of taste in America as much as the lack of support from critics for this remarkable film. By far the most important work Ang Lee has done the movie makes the top of my list in several categories. It's the best Civil War movie ever made, it's the best ride and shoot (you know, six guns and horses) movie ever made. It's the best character study of a slave ever commited to film. The performances are across the board wonderful. Simon Baker and Jeffery Wright are particularly remakarble, they're relationshp being one of the most unique and poignant I've seen in a film for decades. Even Jewel is good. What a movie. I've watched it five times since discovering it in the discount tray at my local video store. Ang Lee deserves so much credit for doing this movie. The critical community should be ashamed of giving it so little positive attention.

Movie Review: A triumph for an increasingly improving director
Summary: 5 Stars

Ang Lee's third major American studio film is arguably his best, where he treads onto a different period yet his all too familiar account of people in dramatic situations remains present. Tobey Maguire once again proves he is Hollywood's finest actor at the moment (and trust me, I am as serious as a heart attack when I say that) and Skeet Ulrich puts in another fine performance. Jewel was equal to the lead man and deserves all the kudos she gets for which is certainly an underrated performance. I won't nag on how this film deserved better than the reception it received in America (and Europe for that matter) and also won't go crazy how Ang Lee, for a second time was overlooked for an Oscar nomination for his flawless work. Just watch this film, and savour up the glorious 2 hours in entertainment it provides. Hands down, the best civil war film ever made.

Movie Review: MORE PEOPLE NEED TO SEE THIS FILM
Summary: 5 Stars

Mr. Lee's excellent depiction of the Border War on the Missouri/Kansas frontier provides a much-need context for that struggle that may help people of today to better understand what happened and why. The acting is uniformly impressive, the clothing is perfect, the film's location shots were filmed where the story actually took place for the most part, and most of all, the dialogue exactly captures the feel and flavour of the period. This is not a plot-driven film, it is carried along by the character developement and interaction. If you are looking for slam-bang action or set-piece Civil War battles, try another film. But if you want to explore causes, motivations and effects, check this film out. I'm glad that I did.

Movie Review: Fantastic film
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm not the biggest fan of Civil War films, but this one is fantastic. It covers the war in the west better than any other film and I like to use it in class to show what life was like for women, minorities and immigrants - one of the best, if not the best movie for it. This is one of the few films I'll recommend be shown in both survey and full semester courses on the matter. If you teach at the high school levels, be sure to get permission from parents as the language is rough. At the college levels - well, I've never had a student complain about this film in any way. I'm a bleeding liberal, teaching in a very liberal and multicultural area, and this film had us at some points crying for the South. Well done!
