Movie Reviews of Rick Springfield: Live in Rockford

Movie Review: NOT THE RICK I REMEMBER
Summary: 3 Stars

I have to admit that the clear picture, 5.1 Dolby Digital sound and song list are quite impressive. Unfortunately the poor camera angles and bad editing took away from the flow of Rick's performance leaving me disappointed. Rick Springfield is a great showman on stage but in this concert he goes overboard with the drama. Rick is constantly stopping during songs to talk and goof around with the audience and it completely detracts from his performance. If the camera guys would have focused more on Rick and the band and less on the crowd, the viewing experience would have been better. I bought this concert DVD to see Rick Springfield sing and play guitar but it just wasn't enough to completely satisfy me.

Movie Review: Good songs - presentation not so great
Summary: 3 Stars

Since seeing the video of "I get excited" back in the 80's I have always wanted to have a dvd of Rick. I was a bit disappointed to watch a song in concert and suddenly find myself listening to an interview with Rick before the song continues. This breaks the flow of the concert. Surely they could have kept all interviews as added "special features". The music includes many of Rick's greatest songs!

Movie Review: Disappointing Antics from a great singer!!
Summary: 2 Stars

Firstly let me state that I've been a huge Rick Springfield fan since the 80's. Great voice, fantastic songwriter, powerful arrangements. I think the new CD release "Venus In Overdrive" is very good and have been impressed with his persisting high standard. I therefore had high expectations from this DVD - which unfortunately were not realised! He is still singing superbly and the band is great, BUT really : after 3 decades, to still be smashing guitars on stage ????? I expected more musical maturity from such a veteran. He obviously really thinks it is cool as he does it again on the bonus footage. (Tired, juvenile behaviour!) Also, the gimmicky frantic guitar strumming with bunches of flowers was cute the first time. Watching this antic in every song however, drove me mad! Getting the family to sing with him on stage, wandering through the crowd touching hands, kissing a child in the audience, and generally all the primping and preening of a teen idol was great for the aging groupies I suppose, but a huge letdown and disappointment for me and I suspect also for many other musicians who respect him for a great catalogue of superb songs. I'll be sticking to his CD's from now on.
