Movie Review: Deluded Character Sheds Light
Summary: 5 Stars

That would be my take on it. I found this movie, first of all, watchable. It made me ask questions as I watched, questions about what it means 'to be someone', what it is she actually hoped to be, and how she thought moving to Paris would help her realize that. The desire to 'come alive' is often achieved through travel or a drastic change of some kind and I can fully understand wanting to escape the suburbs and the hometown - so on one level I could relate. Not to mention that divorce and abortion were were both taboo in the 50s (when the movie seems to be taking place). It becomes a chessboard of tangled issues developing and playing against each other as the story progresses.

DiCaprio and Winslett did a good job acting in this as well and their dialogues pulled me in. DiCaprio is sometimes hit and miss for me. I liked him in "Catch Me If You Can", another 50's piece, and in this one I also found him more or less sympathetic (and fairly believable). The character of the insane/truth-telling son of the housing agent was an added plus and helped really bring out the issues in the film. It ended nicely too I thought and left me pensive. I don't think this movie is simply about agreeing or disagreeing with the course the characters take (although that is inevitable) but rather seeing the very familiar attitudes and needs which spurn them on on their way. The extremity to which she takes things is what makes you really think about it and (probably) come to your own more healthy conclusions.

Movie Review: Revolutionary Road
Summary: 5 Stars

Wow....that's what I was left saying after I watched the final credits roll up the screen at the end of this movie. Between Kate Winslet acting like a certified, yet somehow sane, nut and Leonard DiCaprio seamlessly playing the helpless husband racked with his own guilt, I felt totally satisfied about spending my well earned[..] on this movie, twice (yes, twice).
Now I must admit I think I've seen, like, one Kate Winslet movie ever before this, and I just recently started getting on the DiCaprio bandwagon after watching both The Departed and Blood Diamond in the same year (after that I was hooked on DiCaprio). But after watching Revolutionary Road, I was all aboard team Winslet. She was so captivating in this role, so emotional and raw and riveting all at once. This is one of those movies that you just have to see for yourself and derive your own meaning behind it. It just touched on so many different issues like love, the sanctity of marriage, forgiveness, rage, entrapment, loneliness and helplessness.
A young married couple try to live the normal suburban life like so many of their friends have and find out that, with that, comes its challenges, its heartbreak and its own imprisonment and solitude.
I ADORED this movie. I felt like the second time I saw it, I picked up even more from it. Watch it, it'll be the best [...] you've spent in a long while. Then come back and let me know what you picked up from it. Ciao

Movie Review: Revolutionary Road -- 1 of the Top 5 Films of 2008
Summary: 5 Stars

Many of the reviewers here are focused on the film being set in the 50s and that this makes it somehow cliche. What I found so compelling about the movie was how applicable it is to today (or any day/time for that matter). I could completely relate to the characters and, had I married someone not as adventurous as myself, may have found myself living the same nightmare. It was like I could see on screen what my life would've been like if I'd chosen the wrong partner. I hung on every word of dialogue and thought the screenplay was extraordinary, especially considering it was adapted from such a fine novel. There have been many movies that have tackled this type of material before, but that, in and of itself, does not take away from what an amazing film this is. None of the others (American Beauty, Far From Heaven) had grabbed me the way this one did. The fact that it was set in the 50s didn't mean much to me because that's not the ultimate focus of the message for me. The acting is flawless and I thought the movie was absolutely robbed at the Oscars. At least Kate was recognized for The Reader. If you can appreciate a well written and acted marital tragedy, you won't find a better film.

Movie Review: Meant to be disturbing
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie was troubling to watch, but I understand that was Yates' intention when he wrote the book- a caustic and searing portrayal of life in 1950s suburbia. The chemistry between the DeCaprio and Winslet characters worked well (disclaimer: I have never seen Titanic), and the situation was an eerily familiar one for my wife and me: stay in a comfortable but potentially numbing existence, or take a chance and move to Europe (Budapest, not Paris). The dilemmas posed in this film were all too real, especially for the time and place where April's character had few options. The atmosphere of disapproval, from Frank's colleagues at work to the Wheeler's neighbors, was also an accurate depiction. There is a real contradiction between the American cultural enshrinement of individuality, with the condemnation shown when that individuality raises difficult questions about people's own lives and the comfort of conformity. Every character was tragic in some way or another, some more than others, but as real characters they were not so far removed from what anyone could possibly be.

Movie Review: Dark And Powerful Movie
Summary: 5 Stars

Revolutionary Road is a dark movie exploring the relationships of a married couple during the 1950s - the feelings of being pent up after the intial falling in love and trying to pursue dreams in a hope of salvation.

The movie "hits home" to personal experiences if you had family issues or know people who have had issues (which most people have) and the intensity, and often subtle, of tensions, arguments and figthing become properly uncomfortable. It is dark and sometimes a bit melodramatic in a couple of scenese, but despite the shortcomings the movie is a very good one.

WInslet and DiCaprio, as the married couple, turn in another round of great performances that bring the depth, and despair, to their roles and ultimately the movie all comes together as you fall into the pacing and direction of the movie.

Mendes direction is superb and the costumes, sets and lighting are very well done as you feel like you have been transported to the time and are watching people as they try to work through conflict and their lives.
