Movie Reviews of Revolutionary Road [Blu-ray]Movie Review: The dark side of the Affluent Society Summary: 5 Stars
Familiarity breeds contempt, but contempt also comes out of complacency and conformity as well. The plot of "Revolutionary Road" is what happens when the institution of marriage becomes more of an institution then a marriage. One must remember in 1950's America that the divorce rate was significantly lower then what it is now. However, that is not to mean that relationships were less troublesome nor were people less dysfunctional. It merely means that society had more built in pressures in 1955 to at the least 'keep up appearances.' Therefore, a loveless marriage in the mid 20th century could be maintained for many more years then what it is now in the early 21st. "Revolutionary Road" follows the path less taken of an ordinary couple who eventually break through of their bourgeois pressures, but at the end the price is too much to bear.
The movie takes place during the zenith of Post-War American power, or what John Kenneth Galbraith called "The Affluent Society." Mr. DiCaprio's character has enormous earning potential, and he can decide to melt away into surburban bliss, and his wife (played by Ms. Winslett) can decide to go that route too, but they decide that materialism may not be what they both want, and they decide to pack up and move to Paris. Of course, as the the externalities of mortgage, children, money and time constrict, this plan is quickly scrapped, and everything begins to melt away. As everything begins to disintegrate, the house (which serves as almost a secondary character) begins to shrink. An observant viewer can almost see this happen due to the brilliant cinematography in this film.
Part of the reason this movie is so heart wrenching is that it is so very relevant to marriage now. In 1999 Mendes captured Clinton-era surburban angst in American Beauty, he captures it much more eloquently and elaborately in this film set during the supposedly placid Eisenhower era. Whereas 'Beauty' watched a marriage decay in post-middle age, "Road" captures it before middle age, where the characters are closer to the beginning of their life, then the end of it. Part of the reason why this movie is so searing is that because these characters know each other too well, they can stick the knife in where it will do the most damage. Unlike Mr. Spacey and Ms. Benning's characters in "American Beauty" one can cheer for the Wheeler's to break out of the emptiness of their lives. However, the movie also begs the question: what good would Paris do? Would it still reveal themselves to be nothing more then the people who meet a tragic end in Connecticut? Or, would it reinvigorate them and let them start their lives over.
In Bob Dylan's new album he writes that 'dreams never did work for me anyways...even when they did come true." The true tragedy of the film is is that the characters will never know what their dreams may have held in store, and at the end they will be fated to become an old man and old woman in their living rooms babbling about nonsense, and turning down their hearing aids. The question one must answer after watching this movie is, would it really have mattered?
