Movie Reviews of Return to Oz

Movie Review: true to baum's vision
Summary: 5 Stars

I remember watching this movie as a child and being absolutely terrified of some of the characters. This film incoporates some features of Baum's Oz that were lost in the original version, such as the Deadly Desert (which still gives me nightmares), and the fact that ALL Ozian animals can talk (except Toto, and no one knows why). Although Ozma comes into the world of Oz VERY differently in the book series, this film introduces the lovable TikTok and Gump, as well as a Scarecrow who is FAR more loyal to Baum's depiction and the illustrations in his books.

I've watched this on tape so many times that it broke, and if there's any way to wear out a DVD (besides scratching it), I'll probably do that, too! Absolutely fabulous, and a must for all fans of the original Wizard.

Movie Review: very Rare sequel
Summary: 5 Stars

This sequel to Wizard of Oz takes a very Serious and dramatic turn for a dark movie really not made for children but teens. There are no musicals or sing alongs we remember back in the old wizard of oz, this is a very dark movie that leaves a more memorable feeling like watching neverending story as a child. The scary images and odd story embarks watchers into an Oz made more or so from Tim Burton's perspective. Its a great movie but not what you'd expect from the original bright and happy wizard of oz. The story is excellent and different from the original and they are linked very solidly although its a completely different take on the genre. I can see why Walt Disney decided to shelve this movie rather than re-release it, its not really suitable for a young audience.

Movie Review: The Best Movie EVER! Three Billion Thumbs Up!
Summary: 5 Stars

As a total Oz book fan, I must admit, this movie is spot on with the amazing classics of the Oz books. L. Frank Baum would be proud to see Tik-Tok (My FAVORITE Oz character,) Billina the hen (with a real Southern fried accent!,) and Jack Pumpkinhead on screen in a perfect adaptation, basically the plots of The Land of Oz and Ozma of Oz swirled together to create a perfect movie for all ages. After I watched Return to Oz, I at once decided that the 1939 classic of the Wizard of Oz is a total turd, making Oz into a candy-coated, sugar flavored bowl of pure, saccharinny poo. (THE HORROR!) Please see this movie and read the books too!

Movie Review: LOVE this movie!
Summary: 5 Stars

I haven't seen this movie in YEARS and I'd honestly forgotten about it until recently. When I was a kid around 6-8 years old, I absolutely wore this movie OUT! I literally wore out the VHS copy I had. I haven't seen it since the last time I watched that VHS tape, but I can't wait to receive it in the mail so I can sit down and watch it again. In retrospect, it really isn't a movie for kids. Its pretty warped and kind of trippy, but that's what makes it such a beautiful piece of art! I wouldn't recommend it for kids, but it is DEFINITELY one I would recommend to everybody over the age of about 10 or 12!

Movie Review: The not-so-merry old Land of Oz
Summary: 5 Stars

It takes nothing away from my love for MGM's sumptuous WIZARD OF OZ -- with which I have grown up and still find as watchable as ever the tenth or dozenth or 837th time -- to say that I greatly admire RETURN OF OZ. This underappreciated film couldn't win for losing when it was released: had it tried to follow the path taken by the inimitable 1939 classic, it would have rightly been judged redundant and inferior; yet it caught flak and brickbats because it dared to go its own way. More accurately, it went L. Frank Baum's way, being quite faithful to the letter and spirit of the source material.
