Movie Reviews of Return to Oz

Movie Review: Not what you would expect
Summary: 5 Stars

My wife and I were discussing old movies we'd seen when we were younger and this one popped up in the conversation. It was one of those "Oh!...THAT movie...!" moments because both of us remember it as being very creepy - totally opposite of the Wizard of Oz movie.

So we ordered it and gave it a watch. It was a lot of fun to see the various things that frightened us as kids. Now as adults we paid closer attention to the way the movie was put together. Surprisingly the characters and effects are still impressive. From the way Tik-Tok and Jack Pumpkinhead move around (and Jack has a nice squash-n-stretch movement to his head which is very cool) to the technically impressive stop-motion animation of the Nome King and his rock spies.

Also, we never realized before that this was Fairuza Balk's film debut.

I couldn't help but hear her telling Mombi "I hope you like what I did to yo lawn-mowa." (Waterboy)

Movie Review: Return to Oz one of the best!
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie is a great portrail of the Oz books. I have loved this movie since I was a kid. The only thing I am dissapointed with in this DVD set is the extras. There are only 2, Faruza returns to oz, wich is very good and interesting, as well as trailers. Now I am very upset since the MGM movie Wizrd of oz has a 3 disc set, and other fantasy cult classics such as Legend, Dark Crystal, and Labyrinth have great extras. Please other oz lovers, please sign my petiton and get my word out. I am counting on other oz fans for support. I have started a petition to send to the Disney corp. to come out with Return to Oz on special Edition DVD. I ask for a little more from the Disneys version of the OZ world. Disney can do it, they have come out with some great Special Editions.

Movie Review: There's a curse on the Yellow Brick Road
Summary: 5 Stars

While I do believe that the 1939 adaptation of L. Frank Baum's "Wonderful Wizard of Oz" is a classic that shouldn't be messed with, I prefer "Return to Oz" because of its more faithful approach to Baum's work. Plus, it's much darker and more intense (the Wheelers will certainly scare the little ones), and Dorothy is indeed played by a young girl, and not a 17-year old Judy Garland (I mean no offense; she was a talented actress indeed, but Fairuza Balk is more believeable here). The special effects are spectacular, and Princess Mombi and her many heads are visually stunning.

So be careful, this will not be as sweet and innocent as "The Wizard of Oz" and the kids will probably be frightened by the many dark elements in the film (such as Dorothy's electro-shock therapy and the Tin Man's frozen posture).

A+

Movie Review: Perfectly Translated to the Screen
Summary: 5 Stars

As a girl, I grew up loving the Wizard of Oz. Either this version, or the MGM grand technicolor extravaganza. Both versions frightened and delighted me.

But now, things have changed. I still enjoy watching both, but I appreciate this film so much more. The flying monkeys no longer torment me the way the wheelers still do. I still like both Dorothys, but I realize I have always cheered on Fairuza Balk, while I never cheered for Judy Garland. And although the Wicked Witch of the West is still a great character, how can she challenge the head shifting Mombi?

This live action version is darker and more of a literal translation of the books. I appreciate this version so much more for those reasons.

I highly recommend this film--especially for children with wild imaginations!

Movie Review: Just as OZ was written
Summary: 5 Stars

When I was a child I saw this movie and LOVED it. Later in life I read the books and realized just how wrong the 1939 Wizard of Oz was and how Hollywood had ruined the book. This movie has everything I still watch it! I disagree with a review that says that it's not for children I have a 3 year old son who loves this movie almost as much as I do. Not only dose he like the movie but he can follow it and tells me what is happening. Don't get me wrong I dont' think that EVERY 3 year old should watch it, it dose have some frightening parts in it and only a mother knows what her child will be able to watch, but if you kids can watch the new Narnia movie, they can watch this. And I do recommend it!
