Movie Reviews of Return to Oz

Movie Review: Haunting, beautiful and better than the original
Summary: 5 Stars

I just reordered this movie on DVD and I'm so happy it's been made available. I watched this over and over as a child - I read all the Oz books and believe me, the interpretation in Return to Oz is much more faithful to the original series than the Judy Garland movie. There's rich textural detail and nuanced storytelling that I think Baum would have been proud of.

I saw this movie as a child (I was 8 when the movie came out) and although some of the scenes were disturbing, I wasn't terrified by it. Then again, children's movies when I grew up included Something Wicked This Way Comes, The Secret of N.I.M.H. and other "scary" classics. I honestly don't think there's anything wrong with exposing kids to images that may be a little disturbing. Life is not all about shiny happy people holding hands. But I was kind of a morbid kid, so I may not be the best person to give advice.

I consider this movie to be a lost gem. It was reviled at its release because it was so unlike "The Wizard of Oz." Frankly, I hate the original movie - way too much sugar candy and twinkly froufrou for me. THIS movie gets to the heart of what the Oz series was about - a magical land of wonder, yes, but there were bad and/or terrifying things that happened, much like in C.S. Lewis' Chronicles of Narnia. I think this is a great movie for kids 10-12 and up who may have read some of the Oz books and are interested in seeing this interpretation of the world of Oz.

Movie Review: return to oz
Summary: 5 Stars

i'd like to start off by saying this isn't exactly a sequel, obviously judy garland isnt in it, and obviously this time around its a lil 9yo girl instead of a 16yo girl. But the story is still great, even though this movie got extremely mixed reviews. i'm on the side that fell liking it. From what i've read, this movie falls a lot darker then the first movie. Its more in tune to the original books, than its first movie counterpart. but it still has that great magical feeling to it. i honestly suggest people purchase this dvd, its worth the buy.
the ruby slippers from movie one, do make a come back. and i thought i saw glinda the good witch of the north in one scene but that was explained to be...
anyway as for the features in this dvd, its also dubbed in french, like thats a real popular language here ugh, spanish would of been preferred. there is an interview with the actress who played dorothy that was made in 2002 i believe. this dvd also includes the original theatrical trailer, and a few tv spots. this movie runs a total 1hour 40minutes.
and if you didnt already know, this movie isnt really for kids, its for teenagers and adults or even people who've seen the original wizard of oz as kids and who are now adults. give this movie a try, i'm sure you'll enjoy it all.

Movie Review: Great for all ages
Summary: 5 Stars

I first saw this movie as a child, age 8, and ever since I have loved this movie, for the most important fact that it is a darker, and more interesting, adaptation of the Oz story. The dark side of this movie may scare children, as it did myself, but it is not overwhelming or too extreme. In fact, this movie strikes a fine and perfect balance on the darker elements, so that a typical child, over the age of 6 or so, will be scared in a good way. This is because the darker sides of this film are represented by things that children really should watch out for in real life, such as stranger adults, and the temptations to wander to far off from home. The characters are unique and original, and the set designs are a visual treat. This movie is a must see for people who want more substance than the overrated sappy 'The Wizard of Oz' movie with the pathetically timid Judy Garland. In this movie, Fairuza Balk plays a much stronger and compelling Dorothy, who we can respect and believe in. Overall, this movie is far better than any other Oz movie in terms of its dedication to the original books.

Movie Review: Way better than the 1939 version
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie is probably the only live-action (I'm not counting live action/animation)Disney film that is dark, but awesome. It's more attached to the books than the sugar-coated 1939 version ever was. If L.Frank Baum was alive in the 1980's, then he would have loved this movie.
(spoilers)
Probably the scariest scene in the entire movie is when she is trying to get the powder of life from one of Mombi's cases. She's about to get it, and then this happens:
Mombi:Dooorthy Gaaale!
Heads from various women begin to scream as the real headless Mombi rises from her bed. Dorothy quickly grabs the powder of life and runs like there's no tomorrow.

This movie is so underrated and it's much better than the films these days, like those High School Musical crap (where are the goths, nerds, pregnant teens, and rapper-wannabees?) and Twilight (sorry, but I really hate these books/movies).

If you want a good fantasy film, go with this one. Enjoy!

Movie Review: sweet memories.
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie is very special to me. I remember watching this movie as a child and my grandfather making me a bowl of ramen soup with rice. I know, that has NOTHING to do with the movie.

This is one of those movies that you just grow up with. Wizard of Oz was a favorite but Return to Oz was even more of a favorite. The story is just so much more fun!

The mental hospital escape, the rocks with faces, the lunch pail tree's, Tick Tock, Jack, even the wheelers were fun (well now that I'm an adult they are. As a kid they scared the crap out of me)! I loved the parts about Ozma and I wish I knew more about her. Of course back when I first saw this movie, I wasnt aware that Oz were books! I always tried to put together the pieces of Wizard of Oz and Return to Oz and wondered where did Ozma come from!

Even as an adult, I enjoy watching this movie. Its sweet in that family type of way and its just fun to watch all the trouble and people Dorothy run in to!
