Movie Reviews of Return to Lonesome Dove

Movie Review: Not as great as Lonesome Dove but still very good.
Summary: 4 Stars

Even though it was a big disappointment not to have Tommy Lee Jones and Anjelica Houston reprise their roles this movie still ranks in my top 5 favorite movies of all time. The other thing I noticed was the location in Montana did not look like the same place they set up their cabins at the end of the first movie. In the first movie there was a big pond by where Captain Call said this is it and in the second movie you never see the pond. Other then those little trivial things this movie was good because you did have some returning folks like Rick Schroeder, Tim Scott as Pea Eye, Barry Tubb as Jasper Fant. There was also some of the other originals from the first movie plus Jon Voight looked almost just like Tommy Lee Jones did in the first movie. That really helped the movie. I don't care it Larry McMurty had anything to do with this movie because it still gives the viewer a great story line. I say just because of the few little things that doesn't make it seem like a real carry over from the original I give it 4 stars.

Movie Review: Hard to follow the original
Summary: 4 Stars

Return to Lonesome Dove was an equal to it's predecessor in the beautiful scenary throughout the film, however, several of the things which made the first an all time favorite of mine, are missing from this follow-up. Augustus McCrae died in the first and this has left quite a void in the second. The continous banter between Gus and Call added so much to the original movie. The loss of it definatley weakens the Return. Jon Voight does an OK job of depicting Captain Woodrow Call, but, the shoes were just too big to fill. Tommy Lee Jones was born to fill that roll and this movie would have been so much better with him playing that part again. All in all, it was an entertaining film, but not one that I would watch again and again as I have the original.

Movie Review: pretty awful DARN GOOD

IF IT wasnt for the first one this just might be awfull the fact of the matter this is plain good,EVEN voight IS GOOD,very passable, PERHAPS HIS LAST MEATY role before he just turned plain awfull.YO HAVE TO USE your IMAGINATION BIG time its not too hard under the big skys of montana, thE CIMENATOPHOGRAPH IS GORGEOUS, and they get down and dirty IN SEEDY BARS,dark starry, cool CLEAR frozen mooment given an essence of PLAUSIBILTY, QUIET remeniscence OFF what is PLAIN GOOD home cookin, or SIGHT OF ole pEYE BACK FROM A MISSION ITS ALL HEART FELT,

Movie Review: Return to Lonesome Dove
Summary: 4 Stars

An excellent movie, close to -- but not quite -- as engrossing as the original. Jon Voight did a fine job. My original thought was that he would suffer by comparison with Tommy Lee Jones, but he handled the character beautifully. As in the original, supporting roles were well cast and added to the "flavor" of the movie and its time.

Movie Review: Return to Lonesome Dove
Summary: 4 Stars

Don't overlook this simply because Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones aren't "in the picture." This is a wonderful depiction of the magic of Larry McMurtry and Jon Voight does a great job as Captain Call.
I bought this about one year ago and I'd recommend it to any "Lonesome Dove" fans.
