Movie Reviews of Resident Evil: The High-Definition Trilogy (Resident Evil / Resident Evil: Apocalypse / Resident Evil: Extinction) [Blu-ray]Movie Review: "We fought the infection. We survived the apocalypse. And now, we face extinction." Summary: 5 Stars
Alice (Milla Jovovich) may have survived the downfall of Raccoon City, but victory was bittersweet as the rest of the world collapsed due to the T-Virus. Now roaming the Earth alone, unaware that she's being under surveillance by Umbrella chief Albert Wesker (Jason O'Mara) and Dr. Sam Isaacs (Iain Glen), she eventually runs into a convoy in Utah lead by Claire Redfield (Ali Larter), as well as survivors Carlos Oliveira (Oded Fehr), L.J. (Mike Epps), Nurse Betty (Ashanti), K-Mart (Spencer Locke), and Mikey (Chris Egan). With some hope left, the team plans a route to Las Vegas to obtain fuel and over to Alaska, the only place where the T-Virus hasn't plagued. Of course, Wesker and Isaacs may have some other plans.
Along with a small number of others, I myself was a fan of the original "Resident Evil" film back in '02. Paul W.S. Anderson might've striken fear, because after all, he didn't do so well with the "Mortal Kombat" films. Yet, even after the backlash, he found his niche when he directed the adaptation of the classic survival horror franchise. It might not have been high art, but Anderson treated the material seriously, creating characters worth giving a damn about (unlike other horror garbage), unleashing a breakthrough performance by Milla Jovovich (too bad she had to follow it up with "Ultraviolet"), and successfully mixing spine-tingling chills and well-staged action.
Anderson turned down directing part 2, "Apocalypse", and let Alexander Witt direct. A second unit director of various films, Witt used references of the games - including familiar characters (Jill Valentine, Carlos Oliveira, Nemesis) and scenes (Alice running across the hall doding bullets from an airplane was lifted from "Code: Veronica") - which may have been fine, but it lacked the fun and panache that Anderson may have brought. Still, Milla Jovovich brought her A-game, and that was good enough, right?
Now it's 2007, and Russell Mulcahy ("Highlander") is now next to give RE fans another jolt. "Extinction" features a bigger cast of familiar faces (including a "Heroes" regular, another successful singer-turned actress, and Mike Epps making a return), more characters from the game (including Albert Wesker and Claire Redfield), and even more scares and suspense than what the series ever produced. It's not an art film, but then again, I'm not into Oscar-nominated crap (::cough:: "Lions for Lambs" ::cough::).
Right off the bat, Mulcahy sets the mood for well-timed scares and jolts that genuinely work instead of just being put there. "Resident Evil" films are known for being action-oriented and full of fight scenes were Alice wields whatever she gets her hand on (it's recommended for those scenes alone). Yet Mulachy shows full respect for the horror portion and delivers quality suspense (the first act of the film gets major browny points) instead of giving into the bottom-of-the-barrel rule of piling on gore for the sake of gore.
And when it gets to the action, hold on to your hats. I will stress this: Milla Jovovich, provided if she DID perform all of these stunts, delivers on all cyllinders. Whether it's using twin blades to cut up zombies or evading the viscious zombie dogs, Jovovich does an amazing job with whatever stunts she's called to do. And she hardly breaks a sweat when she's called to act. Call me a geek, but if there's someone in Hollywood looking for an actress to appear as one of the female fighters in an adaptation of "Street Fighter" or "Tekken", here's one of your choices.
The supporting cast also fares well, including Ali Larter and Oded Fehr, who both don't need to out-brood Jovovich. Even with the small screen time given, urban actors Ashanti and Mike Epps provide some much needed humor in the dreaded atmosphere, though I wish they weren't killed off. Spencer Locke (aka Jenny from "Monster House") also leaves a good mark on the film, and I hope it won't be the last (though the powers that be may wind up putting her in a crap horror film). Finally, Mulcahy did a good thing and brought back Madeline Carroll (the Red Queen from the first "Resident Evil"), who definitely pulls the creepy girl role off with no sweat.
To top it all off, the finale promises a sequel to come around. It's not new, since all these films offered the same batch of snacks for everyone. Still, it's a sigh of relief that there's someone out there that has some respect of a classic game franchise (like Corey Yeun, and unlike Uwe Boll) and use that to make a great film out of. It's mindless fun that movies need these days. But, hey, I'm just a guy looking for that kind of jolt.
Summary of Resident Evil: The High-Definition Trilogy (Resident Evil / Resident Evil: Apocalypse / Resident Evil: Extinction) [Blu-ray]Resident Evil Something rotten is brewing beneath the industrial mecca known as Raccoon City. Unknown to its millions of residents, a huge underground bioengineering facility known as The Hive has accidentally unleashed the deadly and mutating T-virus, killing all of its employees. To contain the leak, the governing supercomputer, Red Queen, has sealed all entrances and exits. Now a team of highly-trained super commandos including Rain (Michelle Rodriguez - The Fast and the Furious, Girlfight), Alice (Milla Jovovich - The Fifth Element) and Matt (Eric Mabius - Cruel Intentions) must race to penetrate The Hive in order to isolate the T-virus before it overwhelms humanity. To do so, they must get past the Red Queen's deadly defenses, face the flesh-eating undead employees, fight killer mutant dogs, and battle The Licker, a genetically mutated savage beast whose strength increases with each of its slain victims.
Resident Evil: Apocalypse After narrowly escaping the horrors of the underground Hive facility, Alice (Milla Jovovich) is quickly thrust back into a war raging above ground between the living and the Undead. As the city is locked down under quarantine, Alice joins a small band of elite soldiers, led by Valentine (Sienna Guillory, Love, Actually) and Carlos (Oded Fehr, The Mummy Returns), enlisted to rescue the missing daughter of Dr. Ashford, the creator of the mutating T-virus. It's a heart-pounding race against time as the group faces off against hordes of blood- thirsty zombies, stealthy Lickers, mutant canines and the most sinister foe yet. Written and produced by the visionary director of Resident Evil, Paul W.S. Anderson (Alien Vs. Predator) and directed by Alexander Witt, Resident Evil: Apocalypse is a superior sci-fi suspense sequel.
Resident Evil: Extinction Milla Jovovich is back in the third chapter of the hugely successful Resident Evil franchise. This action-packed horror film is set in the Nevada desert and filled with intense special effects and more zombie terror. Las Vegas means fun in the sun. Well? at least the sun is still there. Except for a few rusting landmarks, it looks pretty much like the rest of the desert - or the whole country, for that matter. The crowds are now flesh-eating zombies: the mass undead, the oozing, terrifying sludge of what remains. Here, the newly upgraded Alice, along with her crew (Oded Fehr, Mike Epps, Ali Larter, Ashanti) will make a final stand against evil - with one goal: to turn the undead dead again.
