Movie Reviews of Resident Evil - Extinction (Widescreen Special Edition)

Movie Review: "....Your the Flame that Burns me..."
Summary: 5 Stars

{{POSSIBLE SPOILERS}}

I had my reservations for this film, highly muted by the anticipation of actually seeing it, but they were there nonetheless. The basic ideal of 'Alice Clones' made me pause and wonder if they were getting a little too close to the Alien - Resurrection subplot, but it works better in motion than what you believe (assume) it be in your head. The omission of Jill Valentine (and Angela Ashford) was a sore spot early on, but the Novel covers her absence and Claire more than makes up for her lack of appearance in the film. I also wondered why the plot concerning the US Government moving in to deal with Umbrella and the Alice-villain subplot were scrapped, but that was before I saw the teaser trailer and read the rough summary. While I can totally live with Alice not being the bad guy, I kinda wondered what the film would've been like if they taken one more step with the 'Project Alice' storyline. Oh well.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to see it in the theaters, I watched it on YouTube and that's the part that really pisses me off. I wasn't able to see either the 1st and 2nd movies (I loved both) when they were in theaters, and when I finally get the opportunity to see it in the theaters this year, the chance is stolen from me. I am hopping mad that I had to go and watch it on the Internet! That aside, the movie was amazing. It really brought back the atmosphere of the first film which was a blend of horror and action, a focus on the characters whereas Apocalypse was an entirely action-oriented movie, which never bothered me, but it does get a little tiresome after watching it for the hundredth time.

The plot was a simple one; The T-Virus containment measure has failed. The T-Virus managed to escape Racoon City within months and spread across the world, reducing the earth to nothing but a barren wasteland. Survivors of the Apocalypse brought on by T-Virus, seek refuge in Alaska after Alice joins up with Claire Redfield's Convoy and tells them of the Journal she discovered. Meanwhile Dr. Issacs attempts to create a "cure" for the T-Virus, in a half-cocked plan to domesticate the Undead, in order for Umbrella to return to the surface, but to no avail. When he discovers the possible location of Alice, he goes against orders issued to him by Albert Wesker to capture her.

The atmosphere of the film does remind you of the Mad Max series, even throws in a couple crazy people into the mix, but that's where the resemblance stops. Extinction is its own movie and while its a little slow it getting started, the results are pleasing. Of course, the biggest complaint people will have against this film, is the fact that it moves the furthest away from the original settings of the dark and onimus atmosphere of the game series and the first two films, with its take on the word devesated by the T-Virus (The terrible "What If" that always lurked in the back of any character of RE's multiuniverse series). However, it never fails to deliver on the atmosphere of the game's main focus: Dark Corridors and Zombies (Crimson Heads included). As promised, the gore and violence are bought way above the level of the second and first film, which for the first time in my life, didn't bother me. It wasn't Gritutious violence and gore, but enough to give it the "R" Rating (that, and the ever popular Milla-Nudity). The zombies are brought back into the foreground of the storyline and aren't simply seen stumbling about in the background or jumping out of graves Thriller style. The introduction of the Crimson Heads from RESIDENT EVIL REMAKE (2002) was excellent and helped the intesnity of the dire situation.

The performances of the actors are much better this time around. Despite the lack of knowledge Ali Larter (HEROES) had on CAPCOM's Resident Evil series, or the character herself, she managed to create a convincing portrayal of an older Claire Redfield, who's still looking for her brother [according to the novelization]. Milla Jovovich's Alice (the Human BioWeapon of Umbrella) is characterized with a little more humanity and personality as opposed to her character in "Apocalypse". Jovoich's acting abilities have improved greatly and it shows in her performance.

Ohed Fehr continues to charm as Carlos Oliveira, even if I never will get used to that haircut of his. Mike Epps returns as a less quirky and funny L.J, with a considerably smaller role but is a important part of the film's subplot conerning one of the main characters. Spencer Locke (Monster House), simlpy known as K-Mart [Girl], doesn't fail to impress with an interesting character who, thankfully, never falls into the "annoying horror movie kid" catageory. Ian Glenn's performance, however, is less than stellar and rather boring until the end of the movie. The rest of the supporting cast (good and evil) manages to be pleasing without becoming the unbearable cannon fodder you wish to see die, even if that is the fate of most of them. I couldn't complain about Ashanti's acting as Nurse Betty. Granted, her line deliveries were a bit on the bland side, as she was not in the film long enough for proper judging, but I can say her character was hardly charismatic.

The CGI for Resident Evil has once again improved on itself; Everything blends in seamlessly with the real-world environment and the stunts are much more grounded with reality. The kukhri knives are probably the coolest and dealiest weapon used in the film, and the action sequences their featured in are amazing. Milla Jovovich shows off her martial arts prowess, performing most of the stunts herself and never fails to impress. The score composed by Charlie Clouser is alright at times. Its not up the par with Marylin Manson or Jeff Danna's scores but its a decent electronic-orchestral themed score, even you can't hear it most of the time (FX kinda distracts you).

All in all, I enjoyed Resident Evil: Extinction. Its by far one of the best Summer Movie "Finales" I've seen this year. Russell Mulcahy (Highlander) manages to bring a charcter and beauty to the film, that was seriously lacking in Apocalypse under the helm of Rookie Director Alexander Witt. If they ever decide to make a fourth one and Anderson, Milla, Ali Larter, and Spencer Locke are on board with it, I would go and see it. But given that its simply speculation and rumors, I won't hold my breath. --- [a 5 out of 5]
