Movie Review: A western like no other
Summary: 4 Stars
This is no ordinary western, and I was very intrigued. There's a bad guy, a girl and a hero to cheer for, but the film has a mythical quality that tags it a 'western like no other'. I can forgive them letting Lewis butcher one of my favorite songs (Oh Danny Boy), though the Irish everywhere were pulling out their hair, this was still well done. Someone got creative and used a great supernatural twist. The special effects adds a chilling flare to a 'Peyote' vision where the fight with the bad guy ends. Outstanding!

Movie Review: This is not your father's western

This is a somewhat odd hodgepodge of different movie styles that don't always mix harmoneously. Still, I enjoyed it for that. It's unusual and unique style is probably what did it for me. It will undoubtedly set trends for more successful films in the coming years. Perhaps the most remarkable thing about it though, is the visually stunning hallucinatory battle at the end which will undoubtedly become an underground favorite among drug experimenting teenagers. Among the best comic book movies, very much a cinematic cousin of "Hulk"--moody, atmospheric, with cgi that seems to grow organically from the film and theme. All the performances, especially Vincent Cassel and Eddie Izzard, are clearly exercizes in stretching their individual acting skills... these actors are working "it" and shooting for something heavier than a stylized western. This film is in the tradition of the 'metaphysical westerns', (Jodorowsky, Sergio Leone...), yet remains entertaining and beautiful to watch. The penultimate shamanic 'psychotropic' scene delights visually and illustrates what computer graphics can express when not blowing things up or creating mindless popcorn movie monstrosities.
A brilliant film which I was unable to purchase in Australia.

I will watch this DVD for many years to come.
