Movie Reviews of Renegade

Movie Review: Good movie but can't replace the comics
Summary: 4 Stars

First of all why was this movie not released in the theaters ? then I am not sure why they choose this title, since the french movie is called something else ?
I am a Blueberry comic fan so I can't help compare the movie to the classic art work of a comic book. Excellent cinematography and graphics but I must say the movie left me feeling empty inspite of all the lessons on shaminism. Perhaps now I know why they say that it is important to read the book (well in my case, the comic book) than watch the movie ! I guess , in story telling, when the media is less direct, one can use his/her imagination more and make the experience more fullfilling and personal. I would still recommend watching the movie as it is an unlikely western. More than that I would recommend getting hold of some Blueberry comic books which are hard to find but still available and thoroughly enjoyable.

Movie Review: Visually elegant horse opera
Summary: 4 Stars

Regardless of whether or not it correctly depicts Mobius' Blueberry graphic novel (and you're just going to have to get over the fact that no movie based on a book will ever do justice to the original), I found it to be very poetic in its visual style. Vincent Cassel has managed to break from his usual renaissance/midieval character and plays the part of a cajun-frenchman quite well. Yes, it does lack in narrative skill, however it is quite pleasing to the eye. A cast consisting of actors whose parts tend to be those more out of the norm, it qualifies as a cultish-type flick. If you like good shot-picking and congruent tonal/graphic/character design then you will probably enjoy this movie. A good one to watch on a rainy Sunday.

Movie Review: Snakes!
Summary: 4 Stars

From what I understand, the director managed to get the visions of the drug accurate. The drug they are using causes intense violent vomiting followed by curious hallucinations. The most common vision reported appears to be of snakes.... But also the drug of choice (the snakey drug) would not have been that common in the southwest. It would have more likely been a south american visitation.... But, hey, call it creative license.

So enjoy the film. It's a bizarre hoot... And it's got Ernie Borgnine. How cool! Oh, and it's French, so I take it to be a Franco fantasy take on American cowboy movies as transmitted through the medium of Italian westerns such as The Good, The Bad and the Ugly. What's not to love!

Movie Review: Unexpectedly Cool
Summary: 4 Stars

This is definitely not your standard cowboys and indians western. The movie is rather unremarkable in the beginning, but may carry itself somewhat through the proven talents of the lead actors. It does get interesting towards the end, in fact it turned into something that was quite unexpected...
If I were to give any advice to the potential buyer, it would be not to judge the movie by it's cover art or by the plot summary on the back. The special effects that dominate the latter half of the movie are jarring and while seeming somewhat out of place will truly shock some who watch it. I really like to think of this movie as a slightly above average western with an added treat.

Movie Review: Trippy Cowboy Film?
Summary: 4 Stars

I got to see this movie in the original French, and I opted to see it largely because I'm a huge Eddie Izzard fan (Mr. Izzard, by the way, is all but unrecognizable in a beard and perfect French accent).

Anyway, what I expected going in was a cowboy film; what I got was a TRIPPY cowboy film! This movie is extremely bizarre, but I find it very pretty from an artistic standpoint, even poignant at points, and with one great plot twist. They might have even done without the whole people-going-into-the-sacred-mountains thing- the true story is in the purging of the main character's inner demons.
