Movie Review: Classic women in prison schlock
Summary: 5 Stars
The women in prison (W.I.P.) genre, having been born in and peaked during the early '70s, experienced a resurgence of interest in the mid '80s. 1986 may have been the form's watershed year, with Tim Kincaid's "Bad Girls Dormitory" and Chuck Vincent's "Slammer Girls" immediately coming to mind as examples from that year. The ultimate crowning achievement though and also released during 1986 was Tom DeSimone's "Reform School Girls," which was picked up by major studio New World Pictures and therefore received much more exposure than many previous smaller scale W.I.P. efforts. DeSimone had cut his teeth in such early '80s low-budgeters as "Hell Night" and even a previous W.I.P. entry "the Concrete Jungle." But "Reform School Girls" had a larger budget than some of its brethren and even featured some recognizable actors such as Sybil Danning as Warden Sutter and Wendy O. Williams (punk princess from the Plasmatics) as butchy bad girl inmate Charlie.
The story begins when our protagonist Jennifer (played by the very sexy Linda Carol) is all but framed as an accomplice to a murder/accident and is therefore sentenced to three years of reform school. Once inside, she encounters a series of lesbo-antagonists like the aforementioned Williams, along with a female prison overseer straight from hell, played very comically and delightfully by Pat Ast.
"Reform School Girls" has been said to have been a parody of the entire genre and I would agree. The whole premise and the acting are so purposely exaggerated (such as a girl obviously in her mid 20s who sleeps with a stuffed animal at night) that you can't take any of it seriously. This makes for a wild ride in terrifically campy fun all the way through.
You've got all the classic W.I.P. elements present -- catfights, domineering, hot girls in lingerie, very sexy shower scenes, rioting and a suicide, all played across a backdrop of a snotty punk rock soundtrack from Williams that also includes a Girlschool track.
All in all, the W.I.P. genre has never been this fun. While "Reform School Girls" could be seen as something of a male fantasy played out on screen, its tongue in cheek sense of humor along with its gorgeous women make it more than worthwhile. Highly recommended to any fans of the genre.
