Movie Reviews of Red ViolinMovie Review: Ze Red Violin & Ze Mahogany Bass Summary: 5 Stars
One of the Best Movies Ever! Tracing the history of an exquisite instrument, this story is superbly told.
The use of foreign languages without English translations is a bit annoying, but very effective. You get the gist.
Samuel Jackson is excellent as the expert who discovers the famous violin in the present & sees that it gets where it belongs...
I recently purchased a 1953 violin bass which is the first year Gibson made an Electric Bass guitar. When I saw this gorgeous immaculate Gibson EB1 on ebay, with a Buy It Now price of 12 grand, I started thinking....I should buy it! I said to myself "but I'm left handed." Yes, but it's a perfectly balanced bass....it could be flipped & made lefty. When I remembered this movie, The Red Violin, I realized that this solid mahogany violin bass with f holes was a lot like the violin in the movie. I felt like Sam Jackson's character must have felt when he realized how special this great instrument is. It was quite a RUSH to click on that Buy It Now button!
I owe the makers of this movie a big thank you. THANK YOU!!!! 1953 is also the year I was born. MOJO, baby!
My daughter plays bass lefty too. She'll be inheriting this beauty when I check out. I gave her this movie.
Movie Review: The Red Violin - DVD Summary: 5 Stars
It's an intriguing story about the journey of a violin starting with the master artisan who crafted it and why it is red in color. The story takes you along on the paths taken and the people who come to play this extraordinary instrument and culminates in modern times where the violin is being auctioned off in New York. Samuel Jackson plays the role of an expert on identifying the authenticity of this invaluable violin for a potential buyer. But his part also provides the twists in the storyline. This was the first foreign film I've seen and though I thought it might be a problem having to deal with subtitles, it wasn't at all and didn't detract from the beauty of the film and the story. It's the type of film that will have you watching it over and over -- if only to hear the incredible sound from this violin as played by various owners.
Movie Review: Violin comes full circle Summary: 5 Stars
This is one of my absolute favorite films and I have been scanning the reviews to see if anyone had the same thought I did about Samuel Jackson's character. (If you haven't seen the film, please skip my comments because I don't want to spoil anything for you.) I think the ending is so amazing because I think we are to believe that Jackson is the reincarnation of the man who crafted the violin. He shows the same temperment and seems to have a deep need - beyond the love of a fine instrument - to own the violin. When he is riding away in the taxi with the moon overhead - he is heading home to his wife and child - completeing the circle. If Jackson was just anyone - the story couldn't end - he would be just another owner in the cycle. I think it is this reunion at the end which makes the film that much more satisfying.
Movie Review: Beautiful movie and beautiful music Summary: 5 Stars
I can remember the first time i saw this movie and recall just being brought to tears by the music alone. It is so well composed and joshua bell on the violin as soloist is amazing and to today is still one of my favorite solo artists for the violin. And the movie itself is just one of my favorite surprises to date. I went to the oriental downtown milwaukee expecting a dramatic samuel jackson movie and got an astounding foreign film rich and beautiful with multiple languages and cultures. The story of this violin painted with the blood of the makers wife and strings strung of her hair is so poetic and profound with disaster and sorrow!! It is a movie where there is nothing particularly grand, glorified or wonderful about any of the characters because it is all about the violin and its music of harrowed history.
Movie Review: "Art Film for Dummies" Summary: 5 Stars
If you've always been put off by "artsy" films due to their lack of action or speed, then you need to see "The Red Violin". This is quite possibly the best "art film" ever made. The reason I believe this: it has a constant flow throughout...it's not a study on one place in time. Also, there are no extended closed door private conversations or over-done symbolic camera work. Even a child could follow the story line and appreciate the beauty and mystery within. The movie follows a violin throughout the ages. And, at the end of the movie, we see it setting out on another voyage in the hands of a new owner.Pick it up if you have a chance, you will not be disappointed!
