Movie Reviews of Red River

Movie Review: How did AFI top 100 miss this one? "Might be ol Cookie..."
Summary: 5 Stars

A magnificient western. Very authentic with great story and acting all the way around. Duke and Brennan should sell ya right there! Plenty of great lines with action to match. Absolutley the best stampede of all film history. I read there were 9000 cattle used in the filming of this scene. DVD picture is great for such an old movie and is a notch above my vhs remastered copy. Too bad there are no extras on this DVD. I'll admit I was disappointed at the way they chose to end it as in the book, Mr. Dunston was killed by Matt. That's Hollywood for ya. This one is not to be missed!

Movie Review: Defines what the Western Film Genre is all about
Summary: 5 Stars

This film has a good script and some truly great performances from its stars. I really enjoyed it. The score by Dimitri Tiomkin is outstanding, dynamic and pure Western in all its glory. The brilliant black and white cinematography giving us beautiful panoramas of wide-open spaces and never ending skies of billowing white clouds that seem to go on forever are eternal. Clift in his coming of age on the cattle drive is a real standout and he steals this one away from John Wayne. Well maybe, that's one you literally have to wait and see for yourself in this film's controversial finale.

Movie Review: Epic Western that is Character Driven
Summary: 5 Stars

John Wayne at his best. An all star cast lift this film from a western genre to an intense character driven plot. An ego driven John Wayne is not so lovable as he pulls out the darker side of his character Tom Dunson. In his screen debut Montgomery Clift is riveting as Mathew Garth. He pushes his character into principles first as he is forced to go against his mentor. A great classic movie with great direction, great acting, and photograpy. If you are a western fan and a John Wayne fan... this classic is a must to own.

Movie Review: WELL-TOLD TALE OF EXCITING CATTLE DRIVE
Summary: 5 Stars

"Red River" ranks with any western John Ford ever directed and it has John Wayne. Wayne turns in one of his best performances as a man who ages but remains tough and true to himself. The underrated Joanne Dru shows again that she was ahead of her time, portraying a physically and emotionally strong woman who bows to no man. Walter Brennan, a 3-time Oscar winner, gives another memorable turn as Wayne's long-time friend and conscience. The photography is stunning, as are the action scenes. Not to be missed.

Movie Review: BEAUTIFULLY CLEAR DVD
Summary: 5 Stars

In one of the all-time western greats, Duke is cast as Tom Dunson and Clift plays Matthew Garth in the saga of how the Chisholm Trail was developed as a cattle drive. In a sense, this plays like a western version of MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY, with 41 year-old Duke brilliant in his unsympathetic role, with Clift and Brennan great support. The photography by Russell Harlan is superb and Dmitri Tiomkin score is rousing. Definitely one of the top 10 western films ever produced, this one is a must!
