Movie Reviews of Red RiverMovie Review: One of the best Westerns ever Summary: 5 Stars
I think this is my favorite early John Wayne film (it's not exactly early, but it was one of his earlier big hits). This epic story of a Texas cattle drive has all the parts of a western masterpiece--a journey made in the face of insurmountable odds, plenty of gunfighting, and a good, old-fashioned Indian attack. This is one of my favorite John Wayne performances, and the rest of the cast, especially Montgomery Clift and Walter Brennan, create a very dynamic chemistry.I love seeing John Wayne in these headstrong and stubborn roles. Watching the development of his relationship with Matt (Clift)--the ups, downs, and in-betweens--makes this movie very enjoyable to watch, and very touching at the same time. If you're a John Wayne fan, or a Western fan at all, and haven't seen this movie, you're missing out on one of the greatest Westerns of all time.
Movie Review: Where is the Special Edition for One of the Truly Great Westerns? Summary: 5 Stars
This a film that should have been shot by John Ford, the father of the Western. The great interaction between Clift and Wayne is absolutely superb. This is as good as Wayne gets, as good as his performance in The Searchers. The DVD is so-so, with no extras. It deserves much better, as does The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. (And why isn't Fort Apache on DVD???) By the way, for the reviewer who complained this was not in widescreen, it was not filmed that way. Outside of the The Big Trail, almost no film was widescreen until 1953.
I REVIEWED THIS FILM A FEW YEARS AGO (it is now 2009), AND SINCE THAT TIME, DVDs HAVE INCREASED IN NUMBER AND QUALITY. THAT BEING SAID, WHERE IS THE TWO-DISC VERSION OF ONE OF THE GREATEST WESTERNS OF ALL TIME??
Movie Review: Red River in color? Summary: 5 Stars
I love this film of course. It is a classic. All the elements of a great film are there. The performances, the music. But why decry the ending? That ending is the film. Thats what happened in the film. I suppose some people do not like a happy ending. Would like to see John Wayne killed and come away from a viewing that resolved the story in that way. But not me I like the ending as it is. So I am happy. However one beef. This film has appeared on TV in color I have seen it several times. I just wonder why it does not seem to be available commercialy in color. Younger people seem to have an aversion to b and w. My grandchildren for instance. It is a cinema mystery why this film is not available to buy in color. Does anyone know the answer?
Movie Review: Howard Hawks' First (and Best) Western Summary: 5 Stars
An unsurpassed cattle-drive epic, director Howard Hawks' "Red River" (1948) ranks among the Top 10 sagebrush sagas. John Wayne's superb portrayal of Tom Dunson represented the actor's first complex characterization - well-matched by Montgomery Clift's impressive screen debut as the cattle baron's adopted son. In his 1982 critical guide "Western Films," author Brian Garfield attributed the greatness of "Red River" to the fact that "a lot of people were having good days." The film truly benefited from an excellent supporting cast (notably Walter Brennan, John Ireland and Harry Carey Sr.), Dimitri Tiomkin's robust score and the stunning cinematography of Russell Harlan. "Red River" endures as an American classic.
Movie Review: Black and white sensation! Summary: 5 Stars
John Wayne's Red River is one of the most exciting and classical westerns of our century. So, if somebody hates black and white, screw them, it's their problem. Don't even review the product, genius! Alongside The Searchers, this is one of the Duke's landmark films. Also, John Wayne was our ultimate hero, prevailing in every gunfight and every story. His acting AND his strength certainly prevail here. Also filled with action packed gunfights and suspenseful scenes. The ending is fine. The DVD transfer is nothing special, and somewhat grainy at times. MGM DVDS are not known to be the best DVD makers on the market. To shape up this classic western, expect a Criterion Collection re release and enjoy!
