Movie Reviews of Red River

Movie Review: Red River Is Only for Wayne Collectors
Summary: 2 Stars

This movie is about a rancher who decides to make a cattle drive to Missouri to sell his cattle. He says he is going to take 10,000 head. Take is the operative word for he "takes" every cow in the area, including many that don't belong to him. What makes matters worse is that he changes the brands to look like they belong to him. In other words he is a cattle rustler. The other ranchers catch him doing this and instead of him being arrested and hanged as any other Rustler would have been, the owners of the cows give them his blessing and let him "steal" their cows. That just isn't the type of roll any true John Wayne lover can stomach. He also takes these 10,000 head of cattle and starts the drive with what appears to be about 10 cowhands. Now come on, it would take a hundred cowhands to control that many cattle! Not to mention how many he kills along the way for insubordination. He tells them that no one has ever successfully crossed the Red River, that everyone who tried was ambushed, but he is going to do it with 10,000 cows and 10 cowboys?

Overall I was very disappointed with this movie. It started out pretty well and then as the movie dragged on, it got boring and shallow. I can only say, it was by far one of the worst John Wayne westerns I have ever seen. Wayne's character is portrayed as a mentally ill cattleman whose trailriders mutiny against. He is mean-spirited and shallow and when the young man Wayne raised as his own son tries to convince him that Kansas City is a far better & closer choice as a cattle market, he refuses to listen to reason, wanting to continue on to Missouri. When his "adopted son" takes over the drive, Wayne tells him that he is going to kill him when he catches up with him.

At the end a small line is displayed saying this cattle drive started the Chisholm Trail. There was never any mention of this anywhere in the movie and never is it portrayed as a true story. I would only recommend this movie to a true John Wayne collector just so they can say they have a complete collection. Otherwise spend your hard-earned money on other John Wayne movies.
