The theme song of Rawhide - Seasons 1-3 went through my head while watching this movie.
I had just watched Gunfight at the O.K. Corral
which also shares the composer Dmitri Tiomkin.
This one one of the first roles for Montgomery Clift
and with John Wayne the acting is first rate for a western.
The long cattle drive is where the cowboy of the west made history.
The freedom of the open range and the six gun made a new sort of
culture that this western celebrates.

From that moment on, Dunson swears he will kill Matt. Red River has everything a great Western ought to have: a sweeping sense of history, spectacular landscapes, stampedes, gunfights, Indian attacks, and, of course, Walter Brennan as Dunson's crusty old cook and comic sidekick, Nadine Groot.
