Movie Reviews of Red Hot Chili Peppers - Off the MapMovie Review: Welcome back, John Summary: 5 Stars
The Red Hot Chili Peppers - Live. This amazing DVD has all the soul, the funk and the power of one of the greatest live bands on the planet. Taken from several shows off their Californication tour, the Chili Peppers offer up a good mix of funk riffs and soulful ballads that showcase their evolution and talent as songwriters and musicians. These guys, well into their 30s, can give lessons to any young band out there on how to rock. They pay homage to their roots, but most of the songs come from Blood Sugar and Californication. First let me say, "Thank God John is back!" Anthony is a great frontman, Flea is one of the greatest slap-bass players ever, and Chad is a top notch drummer. These guys are all at the top of their game, but this is a different band with John Frusciante. I saw them live on this tour in Norfolk, VA and I said the same thing after that show that I said after watching this DVD, "All the guys were great, but John Frusciante blows me away". He is the PERFECT fit for this band's style - he plays funk, he plays rock, he plays blues - sometimes he just stays back and lets Flea or one of the others take center stage. John is just brilliant here, playing with power, emotion, and even subtlety. As great as the others are, he is the missing piece that takes them from a great band to one of the best live bands on the planet. What a great story - many fans (and those who saw the Behind the Music) know of this guitar prodigy who joins the band at 18 only to crack under the pressure of fame and touring - then succumb to heroin addiction. It was really sad - this kid had one foot in the grave not too long ago. To see him get well and rediscover his passion and his calling - and to succeed so brilliantly - is very uplifting. The sound quality on this DVD is surprisingly good. The band is very tight, and the mix captures all the music and vocals very clearly. I actually prefer the Dolby Digital 5.1 mix over DTS on this disc, it sounds fuller to me. The extras consists of interesting but short interviews and pre-concert rituals. Also considered "extras" are 5 more live songs - I don't know why these weren't just included with the others. Luckily, there are great versions of "I Could Have Lied" and the power funk anthem "Sir Psycho Sexy" there to make it worth navigating the special menu selection. Being a Chili Peppers fan from way back and having seen this show live, I had high expectations for this disc. I was not diappointed. This DVD is a must for any Chili Peppers fan. The casual fan who only knows RHCP from the radio will be surprised at the talent and power these guys display. Great show.
