Movie Reviews of Red Dirt

Movie Review: More Real Than I Expected
Summary: 4 Stars

Many have accurately described this movie as subtle and lacking action or gay sex. This is a story, most importantly, about well-developed characters that almost anyone can relate to. I don't know if being a bit southern increased my enjoyment of the movie, but I could certainly relate to the constant struggle going on (with the lead characters) about whether the cost of change and uprooting your life (or any part of it) is worth the potential benefits of leaving everything you have, everything you know, and all the people who depend on you. I've been there.

I thought the film was done tastefully, thoughtfully, and was fair to each of the characters (not making any one the villain or the savior.) There's a little of both in everyone.

It's not a fairly-tale ending, but life is seldom "happily ever after." I thought each of the characters made progress in their search for peace, freedom, and self-acceptance.

My only real gripe is the sound track, which was nice, but overwhelming at times. I would have appreciated more sounds of characters speaking and less sounds of crickets, but that's minor.

Good film overall. Worth your time.

Movie Review: A movie of many layers
Summary: 4 Stars

Count me among the people who stumbled upon this little movie and was just totally taken by it. I have to admit, I picked it up because the two guys on the cover looked hot together, but this is more than just a gay film. This is a movie about relationships, between Griffin and Lee, Griffin and his aunt, Griffin and his kissing cousin, Griffin's cousin and his aunt, etc. It's a movie about the deep South, the desperation to spread your wings, being torn between two lives when you can only live one. I was amazed by the script and the cinematography, showcasing the lush swampland of Mississippi. It was surprisingly entertaining and I have to say the ending was moving and realistic, like most indie movies, it's courageous in telling the truth instead of giving us the typical Hollywood ending. The reason why I didn't give this movie a five? The sometimes over-the-top performance of Karen Black and the oftentimes corny background music trying to build suspense when the dialog does that just fine by itself. Still, these are just minor points when the performances of the younger actors, especially captivating Dan Montgomery, does this movie proud. Quite enjoyable.

Movie Review: Wonderful story, good production, awesome cast.
Summary: 4 Stars

It's great to see that some people realize that [an alternative social] life isn't bound by borders of big cities like New York City or LosAngeles.

Mississippian Tag Purvis comes home (back to Meridian, Mississippi to be exact)to film this wonderful film.

I won't go into the details as they are already detailed above - except I will say that Karen Black (Aunt Summer) rocks in this film and Dan Montgomery (Griffith) not only is a [good looking] but he can actually act.

I just want to thank Tag and other [alternative social life style]Mississippians (be sure to read Mississippian Dr. John Howard's book 'Men Like That: A Southern Queer History'- availabe here on Amazon.com) for putting the spotlight on ... Mississippi and the ... South.

Movie Review: Loved the movie ... Hated the ending.
Summary: 4 Stars

I loved everything about Red Dirt except the ending. I could not see any reasoning behind the 2 male characters not being together in the end to the point that I found myself distressed. A better ending would have been them riding off into the sunset or staying in the small Mississippi town. All the actors were well selected for their parts. Montgomery is cute beyond words. Goggins is devilishly handsome. Palladino is raw and compelling. Karen Black is great as she plays a troubled women full of regret and angst trying to find some peace and comfort.

Movie Review: Highly Recommended
Summary: 4 Stars

Red Dirt is a very touching story with endearing characters. Tag Purvis has done a wonderful job capturing the isolation and somber feeling of the south. Beautifully shot and superbly acted, the movie explores important issues (self-identity and family bonds) in an understated fashion. Outstanding performances all around from the main cast, particularly from Karen Black as Summer and Aleska Palladino as Emily.
