this movie was an unexpected delight. The acting was amazing and the cinematography was incredible. The story line was abit slow at times, but i felt every single emotion experienced by all the characters. It draws u into the plot and u feel like u are a character in the plot. i reccomend this movie to anyone.

Movie Review: Touching Summary: 5 Stars
No clubing, drag Queens or getting high here, but a lot of emotions. One of the best films I've seen.

Movie Review: Surpassed all Expectations Summary: 4 Stars
I ordered Red Dirt on a whim after reading the synopsis and customer reviews, but remained uneasy about the purchase. Opinions were slightly mixed on the film. I recieved the DVD and as soon as I did I popped it into the DVD player to watch the trailer. I didn't have time to watch it in its entirety, but I thought I'd at least get a good idea of what I was in for. Well, the trailer was awful. The voice over and the music made it seem like maybe I'd just made an incredibly stupid purchase. A few nights later I actually sat down and watched it through.
To my complete surprise I fell in love with it. At first I noticed how wonderfully shot it was. The imagery in the opening scenes is beautiful and continued on throughout the film. The writing was intelligent, the direction moody but deft. And probably the most surprising of all was the acting. If you're a fan of indie cinema then you probably realize that sometimes the acting can be subpar, although tolerable. The actors here, though, were wonderful. It made the overbearing gloom of the film bearable and I actually started to care about these characters.
One review I read went on and on about how this is not a "gay" film. I highly disagree, although it may not be what that reviewer is used to. The film doesn't want to present gay characters and tell a gay story, no. But it deals realistically with the trials of a young man, Griffith, who has wanted nothing more than to escape the only life he has ever known. When another man, Lee, shows up to rent the small cottage on the family's farm, the two form a great friendship, causing jealousy from Emily, Griffith's cousin who also happens to be his lover. Lee's way of life, somewhat nomadic, is a light for Griffith. He sees Lee as not only his way out, but slowly comes to terms with what lies behind their friendship. There is no great revelation or plot twist, only a slow building to a climax that seemed inevitable while watching, although afterwards I wasn't convinced it had to end the way it did.
And I can't finish the review without mentioning Karen Black as Griffith's Aunt Summer. Yes, her strange behavior sometimes gets old, but she never breaks stride for a second, and by the end of the film we come to care for her also. She was astounding.
All in all, the movie surpassed my expectations and I'm extremely happy to have it as a part of my collection.
Why not 5 stars instead of 4? I hinted at it above. This last part contains spoilers and I wouldn't want to do that unexpectedly. Another reviewer already has hinted at the ending (which I read before purchase) but didn't change my view as I was watching.
:::SPOILERS::: So many movies rely on a story that the audience knows will have a happy ending and are usually bogged down by it. They feel contrived and, although sometimes satisfying, we know that it either wouldn't have happened that way or it had to just to please the audience. This is a film that could have benefitted from a happy ending. As I mentioned before, the movie has a gloomy, dark feeling to it and this could have alleviated that feeling a bit and left me more fulfilled. I wanted these two characters to be together more than anything, and in the end I saw no other reason for them not to be than the script said so. Just like all those forced, happy, Hollywood endings, this one seemed to go the other end of the spectrum and be a downer. Hopefully after watching you'll know what I mean.
