Movie Reviews of Red Dirt

Movie Review: Good
Summary: 5 Stars

Poor Griffith. He doesn't lead an easy life. His aunt is really his mother, his cousin is his lover, and he is in love with a man. So that's how they do things down south, huh? 'Red Dirt' tells an interesting story of how a young man deals with his life going nowhere, his feelings for his aunt/mother and his love life. The only real problem I have with his movie is it doesn't really show the attraction the two men have for each other. You don't really find out their feelings until the end and then it's not believable when they do come out. There's one little kiss at the end but other than that they seem to be just friends. Other than that the performances are great and the direction is wonderful.

Movie Review: Emotional love between men without labels.
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this dvd based on customer reviews and enjoyed it very much. After you view the dvd with friends, talk about it and get their reaction. My gut feeling was that neither of the two male characters had ever felt, or experienced, love toward another man until they met. This was a beautiful, well done motion picture. What a shame that 'Priscila, Queen of the Desert' gets mass release and this wonderful film about male bonding is only available to those who search for it. This film is about homosexualtiy and not about being gay (have you seen a gay pride parade or festival?). The beauty of the film is the male bonding. I loved it.

Movie Review: Moving, Engaging beautiful film

I first discovered Karen Black way back in the 70's, and have been a fan ever since, albeit not of her more recent 'campy horror' work but her stunning performances in movies such as Day of the Locust, so it was with some trepidation that I bought this DVD from Amazon to have a look at what Ms Black has been up to lately and boy am I glad I did.
Without analysing the plot too deeply, I was touched and moved by the simple story and the performances all round are uniformly excellent especially Ms Black who should have been nominated for an Oscar for this role. Beautifully filmed and highly engaging.

Movie Review: Eternally Appropriate
Summary: 5 Stars

I hope that out of all the terror that has confronted this country, we take time out to examine our lives and to take a hard look at the types of movies that clog our cineplexes. Red Dirt is a story of family and redemption, of the conquering power of goodness, without having to witness a blood bath in the process. The film is not even about acceptance, although certainly the director could have gone in that to be expected direction. Red Dirt is about being connected with people and place. In a word...belonging. It is about love, without having to define in narrow terms, exactly what love is.

Movie Review: Romantically Speaking

End-of-Movie Spoiler Alert: See Movie First.
Many viewers lamented that Griffith and Lee
did not get together in the end. They're wrong.
They did, not just at that time. Between the
cemetery and the drive "home," much had to have
been said and promises had to have been made.
Griffith only needed more time. Time to mend and
set right the love of family. Lee was willing to give
it to him. The pain they felt at the end was due
to their parting. You can rest assured, Lee will
be there for him. He'll be back. Love persists.
