Movie Reviews of Red Dirt

Movie Review: RED DIRT ROCKS
Summary: 5 Stars

I was completely blown away by this movie. I don't think it is for everyone......true. But if you are into strong, independent films that don't need explosions and cookie cutter plots, you'll want to see this one. Not knowing anything about the movie, I was encouraged to get the film after reading some of the Amazon reviews. And I am really glad that I did as it is certainly one of my favorites.

It's not fair to call Red Dirt a gay film, as it is one of those rare films where a character just happens to be gay. That's the point. Too many films focus only on the homosexuality, here the director has wisely chosen to go beyond that. These are likeable characters that feel real in believable situations, regardless of your sexuality. It is well crafted, beautifully written and full of memorable performances that have a firm grasp on the complexity of the human condition.

Movie Review: Tag Purvis's First Film - Amazing!
Summary: 5 Stars

**Spoiler Alert** Simply put, this film is amazing and thought provoking. Each actor's performance is Academy Award worthy. Karen Black is phenomenal. Writer and director Tag Purvis's film is a poignant and touching story set in rural Mississippi. Each of the characters must come to grips with themselves and the direction their mundane lives have taken. It is a story of forgetting the past, finding yourself and the yearning for something more.

I am uncertain why this film is classified in the gay genre - The M/M romance is a very small portion of the film. If you are looking for a M/M romance, with a happy ending, this film is not it. That being my only complaint with this film (I am such a romantic sap, I wanted Griffith to ride off with Lee or to have Lee move back into the cottage.) This is, by far, one of my favorite movies.

Movie Review: THE CREAM ALWAYS RISES
Summary: 5 Stars

I know that Hollywood just flew right past this movie because it was no doubt "different" and perhaps in their eyes, difficult to market. To some it's not gay enough and to others it's not straight enough... God forbid it was to simply be human, and to accurately reflect on this condition.

However, I am at least thankful that "RED DIRT" has come to light on dvd. This is a first film for the director, which is unbelieveable. Granted, it is obviously a very personal film and in that way his attachment to the material is clear. But I will take a film with a passion so rare over jaded filmmaking any day. And I commend the filmmakers for their subtle telling of a story that so deserves to be told, and that will one day prove to be an endearing classic...at which point, Hollywood will ask themselves "How did we miss this one?"

Movie Review: Not crossing that line
Summary: 5 Stars

Red Dirt clearly shows the difference between what woman need, want, and ultimately get; versus what men want, need, and cannot have. The isolation of living in a rural area reflects what many men feel, yet understand those feelings are best kept as a dirty secret in a culture that embraces women's feeling first.

Perhaps this film is best described as one man's journey of learning how to love, for his first time, in a non-sexual way -- and this lesson helps him overcome a past that has been disappointing and empty. I think it is a difficult issue for grown men (as opposed to teenaged boys) to face without crossing that line of full engagement, which itself involves different and un-related dynamics.
