Movie Reviews of Red Dirt

Movie Review: Worth your time, money, and emotions
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie will leave an imprint on your mind similar to the stain left by walking barefoot on the soil of many southern states. I was glad to see that this film was not full of sex and nudity that is easily found in other movies if that is what you're looking for. You will be pleasantly surprised by the involved soundtrack and stunning cinematography, but the real story here is what shines through and makes you want to watch it over and over. The cast performances by all of the main characters are absolutely amazing. There are tears and there is absolute joy, along with a lot of raw human emotion that isn't over dramatized or out of a bottle. I whole heartedly recommend this story if you would like a gay drama that is more than a few guys walking around in front of a camera making out. I rented this movie and within the first few minutes of the film, I knew it was one I would want to purchase to keep and watch. The story unfolds on so many levels - it gives me the same feeling felt when reading a very well written book, with vivid imagery, characters so real you feel like you're them, and a story that you'll catch yourself thinking back to. Get it - for this price you'd be a fool not to. I can't wait to see what the director comes out with next (this is his first feature length film! amazing!)

Movie Review: Impressive and moving film making
Summary: 5 Stars

The story of a young man and his coming of age - but not in the usual sense. The main character, Griffith, comes to know who he is and what his place in the world is. While the film is visually compelling it is also well written with realistic characters.

The story opens with Griffith and his cousin Emily both dreaming of different paths in their lives. He longs to escape the small town they grew up in and she can't ever see herself ever leaving. Just under the surface there's a sense of desperation in Griffith and Emily - but it takes the arrival of a stranger to bring this out. Karen Black plays Griffith's invalid aunt - a woman haunted by her hidden past and her agoraphobia. As the story develops, the film manages to portray an wonderfully uneasy balance that most films lack - the overall sense of isolation and need to escape with the soul deep bond between Griffith and the land. The ending is anything but pat, leaving open the paths the characters will walk - but is very moving.

By the end of the film, I really felt as if these were real people with real problems - not just hollywood cardboard cutouts. I thoroughly enjoyed and recommend "Red Dirt" as a film that will stand up to the test of time.

Movie Review: love lost
Summary: 5 Stars

This film is about 2 young men who become more than friends. One is trapped in a safe, but very lonesome Southern backwater who can't take a shot at possible happiness by leaving his "new found mother"alone and fend for herself',now that his cousin and only sexual outlet has left town. The other,a virile, handsome, and dream-filled drifter, who is looking for the end of that proverbial rainbow out West",comes upon the scene after seeing a cottage for rent sign.Their chance meeting becomes a mutual bond and leads to love for each other. But there is no happy ending here, only a very difficult and unselfish choice to be made.Sadly, one of them must choose to stay behind to care for an eccentric mother. His failure to do so will haunt him always, no matter how many men enter his life.It is a brave but bittersweet choice. This film is about love of the heart and not the flesh.Regrettably, one never "owns love","love owns those who are seduced by it".In this sad , gut wrenching predicament, one must sacrifice his own potential happiness, with that of a new-found love ,his Mother. This film captures that tragedy.

Movie Review: No hunky go-go boys
Summary: 5 Stars

This film is not for everybody. If you are an urban or suburban Gay and you're looking for a movie full of characters and settings that are comfortably familiar to your own big-city gay-bar milieu, you won't find that here. On the other hand, if you've ever lived in the South, or in any rural area where time moves slower and "character" describes more what is within a person than their outward dress or affectations, you will find this very believable, and you will be impressed by the rich, colorful, and authentic people and events in this movie.

No, it's not a "hilarious, predictable, deliriously romantic and sexy feel-good" movie like "I Think I Do."

No, it doesn't have any "aspiring Broadway songwriters" or "hunky go-go boys" or "acidic, motor-mouthed drag queens" like the movie "Trick."

What it does have, as another reviewer here has said, is "profound and multi-layered story-telling at its finest." It's a deeply touching story, with stunning cinematography and amazing cast performances.

Movie Review: For all those times you didn't realize.
Summary: 5 Stars

The cinematography in this is superb, the acting is superb. The whole thing is superb. Most of all, the story. Too often, we can spend time around someone, with someone, and emotions will grow and grow, without us knowing it. It is not until you get in a fight about something trivial, that your true feelings show. I loved the fact that the characters expressions of love were minimal, and that through out the film they were friends and not lovers. We've all had a friend that we were amazingly close to, would have died for. But most of the time the thought that we were (or are) in love with them doesn't occure, for whatever reason that we won't allow it to. This is one fine movie, that doesn't deal with sex, it deals with emotions that two people can feel, unspoken more than anything. And that is beyond male/male, female/female, male/female, female/male, or any other possible human combination. It shows that to be deeply in love has little to do with sex, and that is one hell of a novel idea nowadays.
