Movie Review: Family television at its finest

Tired of turning on your television and seeing only adult junk? Or, worse yet, are you tired of turning on shows that claim to be "kid-friendly" and yet have more adult material than the "adult" shows? Don't worry, because there is still good quality programming out there for your entire family to sit down and enjoy together. Reba is one of those shows.
Reba is a heartfelt family sitcom. In the first season, Reba Hart (played by, of course, Reba McEntire) finds out that her dentist husband Brock (Christopher Rich) has had an affair with his dental hygienist, the ditzy Barbra Jean (Melissa Peterman), who is pregnant. At the same time, she finds out that her oldest daughter, Cheyenne (Joanna Garcia) is also pregnant and about to marry her football playing boyfriend, Van (Steve Howey). It sounds as if this show, as well, is too racy for the family, but one of the many brilliant aspects of this show is that the writers have crafted a story that focuses less on the circustances of this dysfunctional family and focuses more on how they pull through it and work through their differences together. That is not to say there are not problems and tensions within this family, there are. However, the theme at the end that you walk away with fits the montra of the theme song, McEntire's single "I'm a Survivor": no matter what life throws at you, family comes first, and even when you have your differences, you can work through things together. It's a great message for our society today.
As the third season opens, Reba's second daughter Kyra (Scarlett Pomers), who is your typical teenager, decides to move out of Reba's house and live with Brock and Barbra Jean, much to the dismay of Reba, in the hopes of getting more attention there, which is something she feels is lacking in Reba's house when she has Van, Cheyenne, their daughter Elizabeth, and her youngest son Jake (Mitch Holleman) to think about. In addition, the third season provides a lot of character development for both Brock and Barbra Jean as Brock goes through another crisis, this time a bout with depression, which threatens to tear apart his marriage with Barbra Jean.
Despite all the problems, the Hart family presses on, and in the third season continues to delight us with the superb writing, the outstanding (and evident) chemistry with the ensemble cast, and stories that reminds us that, at the end of the day, family comes first.
