Movie Reviews of Reap the Wild WindMovie Review: Grand hokum on the high seas! Summary: 4 Stars
Cecil B. de Mille's typically lavish tale of wrecks and wreckers, Reap the Wild Wind, stars Paulette Godard, Ray Milland, John Wayne and that giant squid. Godard gets to play a Southern belle the way she'd have probably played Scarlett O'Hara had she got it, so we all had a lucky escape there, while Raymond Massey provides the black-hearted villainy as he lures the Duke's honest skipper onto the reefs in more ways than one. There's gorgeous Technicolor photography and some generally impressive special effects work - the studio tank work on the opening wreck is particularly striking - though I could have done without Ray Milland's ventriloquist act with the dog.
Universal's DVD offers a superb transfer which corrects most of the audio problems with their video release.
Movie Review: Great Transfer to DVD Summary: 4 Stars
There isn't much to add to what has already been said. I saw this film for the first time at Teacher.'s College in 1968. We belonged to a film society. I had great memories of the splash and effects. The DVD transfer is phenomenal and you feel that you are watching this back in 1941. This is well worth the purchase price. You will not regret it. From the first, be prepare to boo and hiss Raymond Massey oooo he is baaaad!!
Movie Review: I love this film Summary: 4 Stars
"Reap the Wild Wind" was a huge hit, and deservedly so. Paulette Goddard, playing a Scarlett O'Hara of Key West, demonstrated that she could have done credit to the role of Scarlett in "Gone With the Wind" had she not lost out to Vivien Leigh. "Reap the Wild Wind" is beautifully filmed...it is visually very colorful and exciting...the costumes are fabulous...everyone did a fine job.
Movie Review: Run of De Mille sea yarn Summary: 3 Stars
Cecil B. DeMille's Technicolor epic REAP THE WILD WIND won a Special Effects Oscar, primarily for a giant rubber squid that was brought to life by 21 remotely-controlled motors. As in many of his pictures, the director voice intros the story, which is a fairly straightforward one.
SYNOPSIS--
In the 1840s, Atty. King Cutler (Massey) and brother Dan (Preston) run a piratical Key West-based salvage operation. After they cause ships to run aground on shoals off the Florida Keys, the Cutlers remove cargo and ransom it back to owners at half its value.
Loxi Claiborne (Goddard) is their competition, an honest, tomboyish gal who can't get the upper hand on the Cutlers.
When a cutter piloted by Capt. Jack Stuart (Wayne) founders during a storm, the nearby Cutlers swoop in and take her cargo, leaving Loxi to rescue the crew, which is how she meets Stuart. In a lapse of script continuity they're suddenly in love.
Loxi goes to South Carolina to speak with Cmmdre. Devereaux (Hampden) about naming Stuart the skipper of a brand new steamer. The commodore is very ill however and Loxi tries to charm his subordinate, Steve Tolliver (Milland) into doing her bidding. Steve falls for her, and maybe Loxi returns his regard; thus a love triangle is formed with an active rivalry between Steve and Jack.
Back in Key West, Jack assumes command of the steamer and King Cutler approaches him about double-crossing his newly-appointed boss, Steve Tolliver. Meanwhile, Loxi must find a way to stop the Cutler brothers' illegalities and to sort things out with her two suitors. What she doesn't know is that an enormous sea monster will decide this second matter for her.

Movie Review: Movie is terrific (5 stars), but DVD falls short Summary: 3 Stars
The film itself is extrememly entertaining with a great cast, wonderful color, effectiver music, good special effects. But considering the possibilities of DVD, I was disappointed in what the techicians did. Yeah, there is a trailer with DeMille himself, and some text about the movie and the actors, but it could have been better. Still, it preserves a film in pristine condition for multiple viewings.
