Movie Reviews of Real Genius

Movie Review: You have to get this movie - It's a moral imperative !!
Summary: 5 Stars

I don't recall hearing about this movie while it was playing in theaters, but it found its way to me via cable movie channels. It became a guilty pleasure and I took every opportunity to watch it when it came on. Finally on DVD, this is a must for fans of "Smart people vs. Bad people" comedies. The humor is at a higher intellectual level than typically found (e.g. the Revenge of the Nerds movies) in movies of this genre.

The performances are first rate - Val Kilmer is over the top, but is precisely what this movie requires. William Atherton is perfect as the egomaniacal professor and Gabriel Jarret as the prodigy struggling against societal prejudices.

This is for anyone with fantasies of being brilliant, fighting evil, righting wrongs, or who just love a quirky comedy.

Movie Review: Nerd Humor
Summary: 5 Stars

What others say about this movie is all true. It is a clever plot with the brainy, socially inept nerds triumphing over evil in the end. But the characters are all crafted brilliantly by this very underrated cast. Kilmer is superb as the glib, irreverent leader, but the honest earnestness of Gabriel Jarret as Mitch is hard not to like. Not mentioned in the other reviews is Michelle Myerink as the hyperkinetic Jordan who drives her roommates insane and does floor sanding to combat insomnia. She is outstanding in her role here. This movie is also totally riddled with California Polytechnic in-jokes, but honestly you need a guide to spot them. Even without knowledge of those, you have to love the witty dialog and eccentric character portrayals.

Movie Review: Val: Where are your sideburns?
Summary: 5 Stars

When I think genius the first name that comes to mind is of course, Sir Val Kilmer. I mean, hes at least in my top 4 favorite Batmans ever! Real Genius is a creative masterpiece combining elaborate plot with cutting edge special effects. I won't give away the ending, but all I'm saying is I hope your hungry...very hungry. Val ability to thrawt the plans of his power-hungry professors gives all us dreamers the hope that we can one day fight adversity in such a noble way. I cant say enough about this movie, but I shall leave you with this: Following in the footsteps of such greats as Brando, Newman, and De Niro, Mr. Kilmer gives a preformence that dare I say is in a league of his own.

Movie Review: There better be lots of extras
Summary: 5 Stars

I have been waiting for this DVD forever! ... praise the wit and irreverence of this film. Ask anyone smart who was born between 1965 and 1973 about this film and you will get one-liners thrown back at you immediately.

However, there better be plenty of extras on this baby. Like Kevin Smith's films, this is the kind of cult film that has slavish, technologically sophisticated devotees that 100% deserve a director/cast commentary, outtakes and a where are they now?-style documentary!

If they can do it for M*A*S*H, they can do it for Real Genius.

Regardless, I kind of have to buy it, because I junked my VHS deck a long time ago, unable to put up with the [bad] picture.

Movie Review: One of my all time favorite 80s movies
Summary: 5 Stars

I was excited to see that his movie was finally released on DVD. Definitely an 80's classic. It was interesting to see Val Kilmer play a whimsical role (although prior to this movie he was relatively unknown) You'll laugh, you'll cry...okay, you'll mostly laugh. And okay, the plot is not that great, the special effects are virtually nonexistent, but the atmosphere of the film is one you can't help but laugh at. Who can forget Lazlo the guy in the closet, the girl that never sleeps, and one of the funniest parts, the call from "God" to Kent. Good soundtrack to this film too. A must for your 80's film collection. =)
