Movie Reviews of Re-Animator

Movie Review: A Rare Treat Unlike Anything Else
Summary: 5 Stars

What hasn't been said about the film "Re-Animator" by now? Cult classic status gained through a brilliantly done, well told and fleshed out plot makes "Re-Animator" a must see for anyone who's a fan of horror films and science fiction in general. Stuart Gordon is known for translating short stories into horror films, and his results are usually a perfect blend between the original story and his own unique twist on the classical tales. His specialty, however, is H.P. Lovecraft. Using science (as Stuart Gordon and H.P. Lovecraft are both known for doing) the film provides great insight into human anatomy and how the brain works while still providing horrific scenes depicting rather unique and shocking visual concepts. This film takes the idea of scientific experiments to a new level of grotesque and amazing heights that have yet to be matched and countered by other films within the sub genre.

The movie begins by showing a college campus in Switzerland, the Zurich University Institute of Medicine. Everything seems serene at the campus, until the screaming, and moaning, of a man is heard from within a locked classroom at the university. A set of cops knock down the door to view local student Herbert West standing above a man who appears to be dying. After a fit of rage and anger, the man (the professor at the university) dies in a scene of blood and gore. Herbert is immediately accused of killing the man. From here, the film cuts away to Massachusetts, showing a man by the name of Daniel Cane attempting to revive a woman inside a hospital. He is criticized for his actions by his mentoring doctor stating that a good doctor must know when to quit. As an intern in medical school, Dan must study the human body and his professor is an expert on the brain and theory of "brain death". One day during class, a new student arrives. It turns out to be Herbert West, the very man who was shown earlier in Switzerland.

After viewing an add on the school board for a room for rent at Dan's house, Herbert takes up the offer and moves in with Dan immediately, despite the hesitation from Megan (Daniel's girlfriend and daughter of the Dean). Herbert appears to be more excited by the home's basement than he is of his own room, and he asks for privacy from Daniel, a wish that Daniel respects, that is until the one day when his pet cat turns up missing. Megan finds the dead cat stuffed inside a refrigerator inside Herbert's room. Herbert states that the cat was dead when he got home and was hiding it from Dan until he was capable of telling him about the incident. Megan believes that Herbert murdered the cat though.

Later that night, while trying to sleep, Dan is awoken by a series of growls and crashes coming from inside the house. In a state of panic, he flies out of bed and begins to search for the source of the sounds, only to discover they are coming from within the basement. Upon entering the basement, he is greeted by the sight of Herbert fighting off an enraged and uncontrollable cat, the very cat that was dead a few hours beforehand. Herbert reveals to Dan that he has mastered and conquered the concept of "brain death" and is actually capable of reviving the brain of a once living creature. He talks Dan into helping him try out the serum on a human subject by gaining access to the morgue, and the movie takes a turn into truly shocking, gory, grotesque, yet mystifying scenes and twists guaranteed to stun the viewing audience, yet leave them wanting more.

The film uses gore very effectively, never abusing it in unnecessary means simply to shock the viewer, instead it contributes quite nicely to the presentation and concept of the film. Nudity is abundant, and "Re-Animator" is infamous for a scene depicting sexual acts between a naked woman and a dead man that occurs within the last few minutes of the film. Overall, "Re-Animator" is nothing like any other horror film on the market. It's intriguing story, dark atmosphere and subject matter, and disturbing scenes make it truly unique. All of the actors provide a great addition to the plot, and their on-screen chemistry is superb. Stuart Gordon proves his knowledge of not only the horror genre of films, but also of great literary adaptations such as this adaptation of a classic H.P. Lovecraft tale.
