Movie Reviews of Ran (The Criterion Collection)Movie Review: Simply Mindboggling Achievement Summary: 5 Stars
In the twilight of Akira Kurosawa's career he lost none of his ability to captivate audiences. Whereas his early works took their cue from the American western milieu Kurosawa tackles Shakespearian themes here but reimagines it in a medieval Eastern setting. The film tackles such themes as vanity, ambition, greed among other deadly sins. It is also a sprawling epic that does not overwhelm the characters and their foibles. The film is beautifully shot with a number of memorable setpieces. It is tragedy on a grand scale but that should not dissuade you from seeing this essential film in this master filmmaker's storied canon.
Movie Review: a very good one but also a very painful and sad saga Summary: 5 Stars
adapted from 'the tempest' and 'king lear'. similar to 'the lion in winter'. the movie is a little bit too long, but well done through and through. it happened in every nation's history and it's still happening nowadays around the world. now you know why queen elizabeth in england never let go of her sovereignty to prince charles or prince wales or whoever next to take over her kingdom, no matter it's just a symbolized kingship or queenship. never let go before you die. she indeed learned well from shakespear(?) and, she might have watched and read all the above mentioned dramas or movies too.
Movie Review: Ran Summary: 5 Stars
Ran is my favourite Kurosawa film. And thankfully Criterion have made an edition with good transfer and tons of extras. The film is so rich, both visually pleasing and with a moral dimension. Here we follow an elder succesful warrior and clan-leader on a path where he is confronted with dark karma created by his earlier cruel deeds, and the deceitfulness of his nearest allies. The tranquil old age he seeks seems impossible because of the greed and brutality among allies and family members, the same greed and brutality that he himself used to get to the top!
Movie Review: daddy dearest gets HIS! Summary: 5 Stars
one of akira kurosawas last films returns him to the world of shakespeare, here in a japanese adaptation of "king lear". while not slavishly faithful (the gender roles are most notably switched), the movie does catch most of the set pieces and does them quite well. the to-be-expected spectacular battle scenes are there, but the core is the bewilderment and fury set off by hubris and betrayal on many fronts. for people who claim to hate shakespeare, or to hate subtitles, if this one doesnt grab you, nothing will.
Movie Review: A perfect film Summary: 5 Stars
Kurosawa's adaptation of King Lear succeeds in every way, and does so brilliantly: the visuals, plot, and score have no equals either individually or taken as a whole.
Criterion has done an excellent job at reproducing the vibrant colors of the movie, which are essential. The plot is based on King Lear, but where it diverges it is an improvement - the final scene has no parallel in King Lear, and is in my opinion the most moving.
Unforgetable.
