Movie Reviews of Rambo Trilogy: Ultimate Edition (First Blood/Rambo: First Blood Part II/Rambo III)

Movie Review: Greatest action hero of all time...
Summary: 5 Stars

If Rocky was the movie that introduced the world to Sylvester Stallone, Rambo is the movie that sealed his fate as an international superstar. Rambo, to me is by far the greatest action hero that Hollywood has conjured. He is brutal, yet his pains are caused by torments from the Vietnam War. Where Rocky was good until Rocky 2, the whole Rambo series was really fun for me. First, a brief introduction to the movies.

In Rambo: First Blood, we see John Rambo, a Vietnam war vet trying to live a civilian life. At the time, many of United States' soldiers who fought in the war were considered evil and heartless. Many citizens felt that the war was unnecessary, that it was not our fight. We see Rambo go to a quiet town to grab a bite, but is pushed around by the local police. When in prison, he is bullied by officers of the law, Rambo starts to have delusions about his time in Vietnam and he makes his move. He attacks the officers and escapes into a jungle. The story ensues...

In Rambo: First Blood Part II, Rambo is doing time in prison. He is called by his friend, Col. Trautman to go on a mission. To scour the enemy camp in Vietnam to make sure there are no P.O.W's held in captivity. It is supposed to be a basic mission that involves no hostility but of course, Rambo takes things into his own hands and things go awry.

In Rambo: Part III, Rambo is approached by Col. Trautman to accompany him and a number of his men to infiltrate the Russian camp in Afghanistan. The U.S. was on friendly terms with the Afghan people and they provided them with weapons and other services to ensure their freedom from the Russians. As expected, things go bad for Col. Trautman and he is held prisoner in the Russian camp by some really nasty dudes. Rambo, being the noble guy that he is, goes to Afghan to do a whole lot of a$$-kicking to save Col. Trautman.

What makes the whole Rambo series highly entertaining is Sylvester Stallone, there's no doubt about it. The stories are predictable but they are executed so well, it's just a whole lot of fun. The thing that has made me always prefer Sly to Arny is that Stallone's movies have emotion. You feel for the characters he plays. When you see Rambo and the things he goes through, your heart really goes out for the guy. You then realize, he's not just some macho bad-a$$...he's a guy trying to escape his past, he wants something better for himself but his past always catches up to him. And many times, the situation calls for it and not vice versa. And the fact that this guy very skillfully plans his attacks and devices a gameplan makes the movie that much better. It's not all brawn and no brain. Richard Crenna's character, Col. Trautman is nothing to shout about. He has a fatherly figure in the Rambo series, someone that Rambo trusts and can always count on. He also usually threatens enemies about how dangerous Rambo is, how he's going to kill anyone that gets in the way, etc...I'm sure you get the picture, but it's still a pretty decent character.

In short, you've got to get this DVD set. Rambo is one of those classic movies, not only in terms of action but in it's spirit and gusto. I am mesmerized everytime I watch it. To end my review, I would like to quote one of my favourite lines from the movie.

Col. Trautman: The war, the whole conflict may have been wrong but damn it don't hate your country for it.
Rambo: Hate? I'd die for it.
Col. Trautman: Then what is it that you want?
Rambo: I want, what they want, and every other guy who came over here and spilled his guts and gave everything he had, wants! For our country to love us as much as we love it! That's what I want!

Folks, this is a must-buy. Highly recommended!
