Movie Reviews of Rambo III

Movie Review: This is a fun adventure filled with action and violence
Summary: 5 Stars

This 1988 excellent action film has just the opposite view of fighting in Afghanistan than the US has today, 22 years later. These were the days when the Russians were fighting in Afghanistan. John Rambo, retired Army Special Forces expert, with long curly hair and many body scars, is in Thailand fighting in a sports ring. He is hit more than a dozen times without being able to land a hit of his own. We see that he is able to stand strong body blows that would have felled a lesser man, a foreshadowing of what is to come. Then, he beats his opponent with several well placed blows.

His former colonel and a State Department official come to Thailand to ask him to join the colonel in a mission in Afghanistan to support the Mujahidin, later called Taliban, against the Russians. Rambo refuses. However, when the colonel goes alone and is captured, Rambo rushes to save him. The State Department tells him that if he goes and something goes wrong, the Department will deny that it sent him, because they do not want to fight in Afghanistan.

When he comes to Afghanistan, everyone tells him that the Afghans will ultimately win against the Russians, just as they beat the English, because no foreign nation can beat them. He and one Afghan go to the Russian fortress to save the colonel. An Afghan boy follows Rambo to help him. A lot of violence follows.

Will Rambo be able to save the colonel? How many times will he be wounded? Will the colonel survive his mistreatments and his wounds? Will the Afghan man and the boy survive? Will the Afghans come to Rambo's rescue? Will they care about him? Will the US learn from the Russian experience?

Movie Review: I've Wanted To Watch This Movie For Years, And It's Worth The Wait.
Summary: 5 Stars

I watched the first two Rambo movies prior to the release of this one. Actually, this one sounded very interesting, but I did not watch it until now. One reviewer pointed out this was considered the weakest of the three; why is it the weakest is also the most enjoyable (as said reveiwer also seemed to agree).

One reviewer mentioned the boy was one reason this movie was not as successful, and gave other examples, though failing to mention Aliens (maybe because that was an exception). Actually, it helped. So did the relationship between Rambo and Trautman. I also thought the scene of Rambo riding underneath the tank to avoid the searchlight was original and creative.

The edition I saw had a documentary on a myth of an American hero. They commented that Rambo was one of four characters in print that made the cross to being heroes on the big screen: the others were Sherlock Holmes, Tarzan, and James Bond (since then, you can add Harry Potter to the mix.) The one comment I'll make is that Rambo is unique in the mix, because his character did not survive the original novel.

I found this movie enjoyable. Too violent for some people, two examples of unnecessary cussing (all cussing is unnecessary, by the way), and at times it was unbelievable. It is interesting seeing this pre 9/11 movie from a post 9/11 persptective. This was a great picture.

Movie Review: Great Movie, Horrible Edition
Summary: 5 Stars

Rambo III was a great deal better than Rambo II, but of course, not as good as First Blood. It's a great action picture and you'll never see Stallone as big as he was in this movie. He had to be taking Human Growth Hormone then. In some scenes it almost looks like there's a slight deformity in his face, which as I understand it, is one possible side effect of taking HGH. I remember when I was a kid, I saw this movie in the theater many times. The ultimate edition, unfortunately, sucked. For some reason I have yet to figure out, they added subtitles in many scenes where there were none in the theatrical version. The subtitles did nothing for the story and actually ruined most of the scenes because they were really dumb. They made this version almost unwatchable for me. So you might want to consider buying the special edition instead. The movie itself still holds up well over time and aside from some cheesey dialogue, is still fun to watch. Intensity, explosions, muscles, and my favorite....Rambo's exploding arrow tips....it's all here.

Movie Review: Excellent movie
Summary: 5 Stars

Rambo III is one of my favorite movies. I've seen the first two Rambo movies many times, but until recently never the third. About a month ago I bought this movie used for 4 dollars and watched it.

From start to finish it was just a great movie. A lot of the details are somewhat historically correct also and the extras are awesome (be sure to watch them if you buy this). The Russians were invading Afghanistan and the US was aiding the Afghans (the Mujahideen). The main arab leader who in the movie said "They rape our women and kill our children" was based on a real freedom fighter named Ahmad Shah Massoud who was assassinated by al-Qaeda 2 days before September 11th 2001. After the Russians left, the Taliban took over.

If you liked Rambo First Blood or the second Rambo, you will probably really like this movie. Highly recommended

Movie Review: Rambo III
Summary: 5 Stars

I thought Rambo II was better than Rambo I, and I didn't think the writers/directers, etc. could top Rambo II. Rambo III is different because the war is in Afghanistan against the Russians instead of Vietnam. Still, it was terrific. John Rambo's character is even more mature, yet still hasn't come "full circle" as his former commanding officer tells him. This one has lots of action, enough fighting to keep guys interested and enough relational themes to keep gals happy -- not to mention that Sly actually looks even better in Rambo III than in Rambo II. I didn't think that was possible. Ladies, if you like Stallone and haven't seen this one, your life is about to get better! Order it today! Keep a drool bag handy.
