Movie Reviews of Rambo Box Set (First Blood / Rambo: First Blood Part II / Rambo III ) [Blu-ray]Movie Review: Depends on what you are looking for,,, Summary: 5 Stars
My review will be divided by different groups of people, depending on "appearance":
For those people who watched those movies before in cinema, or on VHS, and who really liked those movies at that time (like me):
Recommendation: Buy it! Buy it for the movies themselves. They are worth to watch them again, because of sense of nostalgia, because of very strong character, social, emotional and psychological aspects shown in the movies, etc. Social problematic hasn't change a lot to this days since, so it's still actual. Despite the fact that the movies are 26, 23 and 20 years old, the action is still great (not sci-fictional and "cool" as shown today) but realistic.
about the quality of the picture and sound: only in Rambo 1 I've got the feeling in some background shots that the picture is a little bit over blurred for a high-def movie. But common the movies weren't shot recently, so in overall I will say the picture is very much enjoyable as well as the sound.
The only biggest minus which I found in Rambo 1-3 Boxset, is the absence of Rambo 4 :)
I would prefer to buy a Rambo 1-4 Boxset, the same way as it was done for blu-ray Die Hard Collection (1-4). Oh well, you can get Rambo 4 separately.
For those people who didn't watched those movies before at all, but likes action movies.
Most probably you were born in the time when the movies were shot or later.
If you liked the recent Rambo 4, I would recommend too buy and watch the previous 3 also (although in my opinion the 3rd is the weakest one). This will give you a more in depth understanding from where the character comes from, how he becomes himself, how he was abandoned by ordinary society or by "small bureaucracy kings" in charge, his internal struggle with himself, etc. and in any case this is Classic from action movie genre!
For those people who did see the movies before and didn't like them and/or who doesn't like action movies and/or has other reasons against this type of movies, or the story, etc.
Don't buy it, unless you are interested to change your opinion to those types of movies or events shown in them, etc.
Movie Review: Better than I expected Summary: 5 Stars
When I heard they were releasing these on Blu-Ray I wasn't exactly thrilled to be buying them again. I had bought First Blood on Blu-Ray when it first came out after I had rented it at a Blockbuster and was so impressed by the picture I had to buy it. I had seen First Blood in so many different versions including most of the standard DVD releases that I didn't think it possbile to look as good as it does on Blu-Ray. After that I decided I really wanted them all on High Definition but they hadn't announced plans to release the other 2 on Blu-Ray. So I bought the others on HD-DVD (french versions). Again the picture was quite a bit better than any standard DVD previously released but not quite as good as First Blood on Blu-Ray. When the trilogy was finally released on Blu-Ray I admit I was a little mad, I wished they had just released them all together in the first place and now buying the trilogy yet again on Blu-Ray would also mean I would have 2 versions of the same First Blood movie.
I found this set at Best Buy for $29.99 (someone had accidently put them in the wrong area but they honored the price). This was cheaper than buying Rambo: First Blood Part II and Rambo III individually so I bought the whole set.
I am very glad I did though, the picture on the other 2 movies are just as good as on First Blood, and better than the HD-DVD versions I had bought. The sound is also much better than any other version I had. I would strongly suggest that if you are skeptical to just buy these, there is not a better version out there and believe me I know. I watched these with my girlfriend and even she was amazed at how good they looked and she is not picky about picture quality. The movies look like they were just filmed yesterday and not back in the 80's. There is very little grain or film artifacts in these either. One review I read said he didn't realize how much sweating there was in the Rambo: First Blood Part II until he actually saw it in High Definiton and I have to agree, it is so clear everything shows up and looks amazing. If you own a Blu-Ray player and love the Rambo series you owe it to yourself to buy these.
Movie Review: Really Impressed Summary: 5 Stars
I forgot what a good movie the original Rambo was. I watched it through completely again, just the basic movie, and there was so much I'd forgotten. It's a great tale -- basically the local authority gets a little too loose in the use of his power and picks on the wrong guy: Rambo. Mel Gibson's "Apocalypto" is almost the exact same movie but frankly Rambo did it first and did it better (and did it with a lot less gore!).
But that's not why you want this DVD set. If you just want to watch Rambo you can rent it.
You want THIS set because of the extras. It was actually worth watching the whole movie AGAIN with Stallone's commentary running instead of the regular soundtrack. Stallone fills in some backstory about the characters, why the sheriff is the way he is and a whole heap of a tale about the making of the film. Did you ever wonder why films today are so clean cut and Hollywood just can't seem to produce the dark grit of films like Rambo anymore? Well, listen to Stallone tell his tale and you'll understand why films like Rambo just don't get made very often.
I confess I'm doing this review without having seen the other two movies yet but the first movie with the extras has already justified my purchase. I'm really looking forward to seeing the other two and hearing what Stallone has to say about them as well. There are haters out there who hate on Rambo because it's not up to par with their level of sophistication but the loss is theirs. Rambo is a great film and Stallone's commentary adds a lot of value to this set.
Movie Review: Movies for men who like movies Summary: 5 Stars
"A masterpiece...feel good movie of the year...can't take your eyes of the breathtaking imagery"
You better look elsewhere if you're looking for those sort of movies; however, all the vital ingredients of a movie that not only permits, but encourages you to set your mind on "auto-pilot" are here:
Required ingredients:
*Cheesy dialogue (CHECK)
*Mustache-twirling villain (CHECK)
*Wave after wave of faceless bad guys (CHECK)
*One man army against ridiculous odds (CHECK)
*Unbridled killing (CHECK)
Optional, but highly recommended:
*Vengeance (CHECK)
*Grenade-tipped arrows; the only TRUE method for finishing off an opponent ^o^ (CHECK)
*One juicy, rare steak (You'll need to provide that yourself!)
Rambo movies are about one thing and one thing only... mindless violence... and boy do they deliver! Do a search for "Rambo Kill Count" on the internet and you'll get the idea. There is a deeper "plot" mixed in between Rambo dishing out his own personal brand of justice (especially in the 1st one), but it's hardly worth focusing on.
Regarding the picture/sound quality on Blu-ray.. considering the source materials, these versions are noticeable upgrades compared to the grainy DVD versions...Colors really "pop" in the jungle scenes, in particular. Audio is a bit above average, as well. These movies aren't going to look or sound much better than do on Blu-ray. You won't be disappointed.
Don't forget the steak, though ;-)
Movie Review: Rambo's Here! Summary: 5 Stars
If you own a Blu Ray player, this set is for you. Yes, this series has been released many times before. And yes, I have bought each one. To me, this is by far the best set if your looking for picture quality and sound. The images have never been sharper, the colors so vibrant and the sound is just awesome.
I give the set and the movies themselves five stars. Even Rambo 3. I love the characters of this series. Each film brought a new dimennsion to the characters and made you care about the scenario they were fighting about.
Of course nothing compares to the original film. It is a classic beyond compare. But I also really liked the 2nd film too. It is just wild and violent as hell. How can you not love this one if your a fan? I wish sylvester stallone would do commentaries for 2 and 3. I liked them as much as 1 and 4.
Anyway buy this set because it is Blu afterall and the quality is much better than dvd. Oh, before I forget I hope there will be a director's cut of part 2. I've seen deleted scenes for this before. For example Rambo landing with his parachute and hiding it before running upstream looking for Co Bao.
Thanks for reading.
