Movie Reviews of Rain Man (Special Edition)

Movie Review: SUNNY AND WARMER
Summary: 5 Stars

Name a Hollywood actor who would have accepted the role of Rainman and then turned it into an Academy Award performance over 20 years ago. I can't. Hoffman's performance is consistent with the inconsistencies of autism, a disease still unfamiliar to most. The plot is simple. Cruise is all but ignored in his father's will, with 3 million dollars set aside in an anonymous trust. He soon learns that the benefactor is an unknown autistic brother living in a facility in Cincinnati. Cruise's resentment soon turns to affection, as this unlikely duet motors cross country to Los Angeles. Along the way they use Hoffman's incredible math skills to win $ 80,000 in Las Vegas, and Cruise is beginning to understand that Hoffman is a true genius in some ways, a helpless panic during crises. Enter the lawyers and psychiatrists, exit Hoffman back to Ohio. But, in just one weeks' time, Cruise has grown up and seems to realize it, even though his restricted brother is apparently unaware. Do not confuse this movie with Matt Damon's "The Rainmaker". Both movies have plenty to say, but on completely different topics.

Movie Review: Perfectly Cast and Perfectly Told
Summary: 5 Stars

Despite being somewhat of a drama film Rain Man is one of the most entertaining films of all time. Tom Cruise plays the roll of a hot-headed salesman perfectly and Dustin Hoffman is outstanding as the autistic brother he never knew he had. When Tom Cruise's character learns his dead father left 3 million to his brother who happens to be in a mental intsitutuion, he does the only logical thing by basically kidnapping him in hopes of being able to reach a deal with the hospital. His brother turns out to be tougher to handle than he thought which pushes him over the edge. However his brother does possess some unique abilities that he must take advantage of before he learns how much he has come to care for his brother. Rain Man successfully combines hunmor and drama and is a meaningful experience. The effects of Cruise's character's poor relationship with his father is portrayed well, and this type of relationship betweeen fathers and sons is all to common in real life. The ending of the film is also well done as it does not turn out to be as predictable as you might think.

Movie Review: A film that mirrors the best and worst of human beings in modern society and in this sense stretches far beyond autism.
Summary: 5 Stars

Rain Man is a classic film with global appeal but certainly the one that propelled awareness of autism into the mainstream. At the same time it failed to give the public a full sense of the diversity of people on the autistic spectrum, most of who do not have savant skills at all and many of whom are not at all wooden or shuffling like Raymond in this film. But what Rain Man did do was give people an understanding of some of the challenges of autism and paved the way for a far wider public reception of the literary works of people with autism (Nobody Nowhere, Emergence, Lucy's Story etc) which generally went on to challenge the existing stereotypes with the consequence that the incidence of autism was seen to explode from 1 in 10,000 to around 1 in 160 people today. Cruise and Hoffman are outstanding in this film and the story of the opportunistic and image conscious Cruise contrasted with the 'what you see is what you get' Hoffman is gorgeous. Its a film that mirrors the best and worst of human beings in modern society and in this sense stretches far beyond autism.

Movie Review: Rain Man
Summary: 5 Stars

What can I say, you have to see this movie to judge for yourself. Raymond, one of the main characters is autistic-savant. It's a movie about love between two brothers, one is much younger and very successful in life (Charlie Babbitt, played by Tom Cruise) and the other is the autistic older brother (Raymond Babbitt, played by Dustin Hoffman, he got an acadamy award for this one), who is institutionalized. This movie makes me think every time I see it, it's one of those movies that you can watch more than once, rent it and experience the world you may not know exists.

Get the Special Edition DVD, if you're wanting to buy this film. The DVD only has three commentaries, one deleted scene and a featurette. Also a few trailers and photo gallery, but MGM could have done much better. For a special edition re-release it still kind of sucks. Nevertheless, you're supposed to enjoy the film.

This is a masterpiece of a film, and it should NOT be missed. Rent it, buy it, experience it.

Movie Review: An odyssey of the heart
Summary: 5 Stars

Dustin Hoffman as Raymond, an idiot savant who has been living in an institution, and Tom Cruise as his long lost brother Charlie. When Hoffman inherits all their father's money, Cruise feels slighted and kidnaps Hoffman for ransom and drives across country with him. Most of the movie takes place on this trip west, with Hoffman stealing all the scenes using idiosyncracies of the idiot savant - the quirks, habits, routines, and great memory. (Hoffman wins them big bucks in Las Vegas as a card counter.)

Hoffman, who has played everything from a bum in MIDNIGHT COWBOY to a woman in TOOTSIE to Lennie Bruce, has another "role of a lifetime" to bite into. He does a magnificent job, too. It's wonderful to see him work, and Cruise, who grows to love Raymond (though he loses him back to the institution again), is excellent too as a self-centered hustler. Definitely worth a watch.
