Movie Reviews of RUSH: Snakes & Arrows Live

Movie Review: RUSH: Perfection meets Maturity!
Summary: 5 Stars

OK, we all know that you are a RUSH fan, or you're not, so preaching to the choir here. After 60 shows (27 S&A), I am just a wee bit biased ;-)
The joy comes from watching the band take their songs, which were perfection on vinyl, and uses their experience and maturity to turn them into literal masterpieces live in concert. RUSH's consistency is unreal, as I can attest by attending so many shows in just one tour. They play like machines, every time, without fail. Watching ALEX and his antics from up close really is the icing on the cake (IMO). To a die-hard through and through RUSH fan, the release of this DVD is literally an anticipated moment that espouses indescribable emotions upon viewing! Alex, Neil, Geddy...happy 56th birthdays, and please stay healthy and write the soundtracks to our children's lives (as in my neice and nephew's signs for Alex in Philly '08) so the "new RUSH generation" (the other Philly sign) can make sense of this world in the way only enlightened RUSH fans can!!! Movie Review: Much better than expected
Summary: 5 Stars

I really didn't think they could produce a DVD that topped Rush in Rio. That has been my Gold Standard of concert DVDs since I purchased it. But Snakes and Arrows Live actually topped it. I won't bother to review the actual set-list, because song choice is a matter of personal taste. What makes this DVD so good is the picture and sound quality. Most notably, the camera angles on the individual players were terrific. They lingered just long enough for you to get a good look at their hands and see how they were playing. But the shots weren't so tightly focused in on fingers as to be an instructional video. The wider shots incorporated just enough background to give you the feel of really being at a concert. Of course the picture is crystal clear. Finally, the sound quality is superb. I was able to crank up my system to floor rumbling levels without any distortion at all. And you could hear the subtle differences of each of Neil's drum tones.

If I was going to attempt to convert one of my non-Rush-loving friends, this is the DVD I'd use to do it.

Movie Review: STUNNING performance and DVD quality/sound!!! A 'must own'!
Summary: 5 Stars

I've been a Rush fan since 1912... kidding, since 1976. The 'fossil' that I am, i've probably seen them at least 40 times live beginning with the 'Farewell To Kings' tour way back when. I have all their CD's and DVD's. I have played their LP's (vinyl records) on an old 'Fisher' tube stereo receiver with 'Realistic' (Radio Shack) speakers, and 8-track tapes back in the day (70's). As an older '40-something' audiophile now thankfully making more than a high school kid did back then, I can now listen to them via high-end McIntosh equipment and Magneplanar hi-res speakers. Rush never sounded better! That said, and with my high expectations, this 'Snakes & Arrows' live DVD is INCREDIBLE, visually and sonic-wise! THIS IS HOW A LIVE CONCERT DVD SHOULD BE DONE! The camera work is stellar, with a good mix of closeups, medium range, and whole stage shots. Audio is excellent, both in stereo and in 5.1. And best of all, Rush is in absolute top form, moving, playing, and singing as if they were 25 again! This is a MUST OWN concert for Rush and/or prog rock fans!

Movie Review: Best dvd overall
Summary: 5 Stars

I recieved this dvd from Amazon, watched it, loved every bit of it, and only a few days later, recieved a package in the mail from a certain record company, thanks to a certain drummer that I used to play with (long, long ago), and whom I've remained friends with (however long-distant), and from whom I hadn't heard from, in quite awhile, until last year. Obviously, I was quite delighted to recieve the dvd, and since I'd already purchased one, passed this one on to my neice for Christmas, of whom that "certain drummer" had provided the means for her and I, to see his amazing band play in Toronto, several years ago. So, this provided a great sort of nostalgic "vibe" for her.
That said, I'd like to say that the the quality of this dvd is great (both audio and visual), and there's a great "long" version of the strange, amusing micro-mini movie "What's That Smell?", along with other interesting special features. Next to this, my favorite Rush dvd would have to be the full version of "Rush in Rio". You shan't be dissapointed!

Movie Review: They Still Got it!
Summary: 5 Stars

I saw Rush on this tour in Philadelphia, and they were full of energy. I wish I could say the same for the crowd at the show, but the overall experience was great. What I love about the DVD is that it's not clips from various parts of their tour; It's a live show from Holland, in which the band's performance was relatively flawless.
On Disk 1, the show opens with Limelight, and flip flops from older material to some of the newer tracks on Snakes and Arrows. The second disk opens with Far Cry, one of the best tracks they've written in years, and covers most of the Snakes and Arrows album. The encore consists of some absolute Rush classics, such as Train to Bangkok and YYZ.

I highly recommend this live DVD over some of their other releases. In addition to Snakes and Arrows being one of their best efforts in years, the set list is very diverse, and the band seemed to have a great time during the Snakes and Arrows tour.
