Movie Reviews of RUSH: Snakes & Arrows Live

Movie Review: Like reliving the concert!
Summary: 5 Stars

I saw Rush during both the 2007 and 2008 Snakes & Arrows tours, and watching this DVD made me feel like I was living it all over again (minus the smell of beer, sweat and pot). Rush put on a fantastic show, with a great selection of old, new and "deep" cuts.

The camera work is intimate, capturing the trio's virtuosity, interplay and sense of humor. We actually get a shot of Neil Peart laughing! Although it suffers a bit with too much camera motion and rapid cuts between camera angles, it is much, much less distracting than Rush in Rio. And the HD image on Discs 1 and 2 is beautiful (viewed on standard DVD). Disc 3 was recorded in SD and the difference is immediately apparent and striking.

The two channel stereo mix was excellent to my ears - with just enough crowd noise so you don't forget you are watching a live performance (HUGE improvement of Rush in Rio). The treatment of the video bumpers is a plus as well. Zooming to full screen in most instances, the videos appear to be transferred directly from their source, rather than being filmed. This gave me a chance to pick up on the subtleties that I missed when seeing them live.

Add to this a few bonus features like outtakes and the full act 2 intro video from the 2008 tour, and you can't go wrong. Rush fans who saw this live will want to have it. Rush fans who did not see them in 2007 or 2008 will want it as well, but they will feel some remorse for not making the effort to see it live.

A final comment about Geddy Lee's singing. His voice is quite strong on most tracks, surprisingly so on some like Spirit of Radio and Circumstances. But this is not Geddy Lee of 15 - 20 years ago, so be prepared for a bit of a letdown on tracks like A Passage to Bangkok and The Temples of Syrinx.

Movie Review: Catch them while you can!
Summary: 5 Stars

Whilst I think it fairly unlikely that this DVD will convert new fans to the love of all things Rush, for existing fans (and I expect your already are, dear reader), this DVD is well worth the cash. I was lucky enough to be at one of the shows on this tour, and the two disc-set is a very fine representation of actually being there. The sound and vision is of very high quality. Rush DVD over time have always been so, even the early ones, but the newest and brightest technology really allows this band to shine. On top of that, the Snakes and Arrows album is one of their best in many years, so the material being played live is very much worthy of attention. I think this shows through in the performance - i.e. they know this latest album contains some very fine material indeed and they really enjoy playing it. Juxtaposed to some of the best material from the 'classic Rush' period (perhaps, Jurassic period?) this makes for a great concert experience. For a band that has been touring, and touring hard, for 30 years I do wonder how long they can keep it up? All three members have retained their enthusiasm for the work and their musical dexterity (for my money, there's more raw talent and technical excellence packed into their performances than any other band playing today). I do have the R30 DVD as well, which contains some interesting old footage in addition to a recent concert, but this is way better overall. Not quite as good as my favorite concert DVD ever (Pulse, Pink Floyd....you gotta buy that), but a very close 2nd - and one I can see my self slipping into the player to savor the thumping surround sound and crystal clear images, again and again.

And-a one, and-a two, and-a one, two, three, four.....

Movie Review: RUSH - Snakes & Arrows Live
Summary: 5 Stars

Filmed with 21 high definition cameras in 16x9 widescreen format in October 2007 in Rotterdam, Holland, Snakes & Arrows Live is without a doubt, one of the best ever live concert DVDs. With a total running time of three hours and forty minutes, this three-disc set is a dream come true for any Rush fan. Discs one and two feature the 27-song concert from the Netherlands. This mammoth set list features nine songs from the Snakes & Arrows album alongside classics such as `Subdivisions' and `Tom Sawyer'. From the opening notes of `Limelight' to the final moments of `YYZ', vocalist/bassist Geddy Lee, guitarist Alex Lifeson and drummer Neil Peart are in fine form. Consummate professionals, they make the most intricate passages look effortless. The stage is set with Geddy's Henhouse rotisserie chicken ovens as well as Alex's toy dinosaurs and Barbie dolls. What sets Snakes & Arrows Live apart from previous Rush DVDs: R30 (2005) and Rush In Rio (2003) is the myriad number of up close and personal camera angles, highlighting the prodigious musicianship and on stage interaction. In fact, watching this DVD is almost better than actually being at the show. The bonus features include the absolutely hilarious skit, What's That Smell, which was used to introduce the second set. Who knew Alex and Geddy were such comedians? Disc three - Oh, Atlanta! The Authorized Bootlegs contains four songs added for the 2008 American tour. And the term bootleg is highly misleading. A fan in the rafters didn't capture these; they're entirely pro-shot. Completing the package is a 12-page booklet. The only thing missing is interviews with the band.

Movie Review: This Was A Great Tour!
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm so glad that I got to attend a couple of the shows from this tour, and this DVD is a gorgeous reminder of how good the shows were and how fantastic this band STILL is.

I was very pleased with how well it is filmed, it looks stunning. And the 5.1 audio is spectacular! The guys are having a great time, you can see the joy. I couldn't help but smile. The set list is phenomenal, the musicianship, stellar. I cannot recommend this more highly.

A SOLID FIVE STARS! What a great keepsake of a brilliant tour.

I do have a couple of things that I need to mention. As well as this show was filmed, it almost suffers from today's INSATIABLE desire to shoot and edit in the "no attention span" mode. This show is nowhere edited as bad as Rush In Rio, but it still does not focus on the group or individual as long as it should, sustaining shots on solos, singing and such. You know what I mean. It's better than most, but could be better, still. Take a look at Neil Young's, Heart Of Gold. It is amazing.

Second issue is the pathetic piece of paper packaging. I totally understand going "green", but I got this DVD for Xmas and the inside is torn up and folded. Plus the DVD's must be slid in and out, hence scratching the DVD surfaces. This is an issue that they need to improve on. I am considering contacting Amazon to see if I can get a replacement because of the torn, junk packaging. NO STARS for the packaging.

Movie Review: Rush live on DVD you have to love it!
Summary: 5 Stars

I'll start with disc 3 of this set, it contains songs filmed in Atlanta in the next to the last night of the end of the tour. I was at the show and after the huge storm passed over the show went off without a hitch. Rush played perfect as usual, they were filming the show in HD the camera guys told us for an upcoming dvd, well this is that dvd. I'm sure some people even Rush fans will complain about how much of this dvd is comprised of live versions of songs from their latest cd Snakes and Arrows. And yes perhaps there were 1 or 2 to many that you would rather have and older song being played, but looking back on it now the newer songs are strong and hold up well in comparison to the classic hits. The video intro (spoiler the boys from the South Park t.v. show for Tom Sawyer is a concert highlight and not to be missed. Rush also plays Passage to Bangkok which is also a "high" point of the dvd/concert. This dvd has way to many songs to play for you (as Geddy is fond of saying at the concerts)and the bottom line is this, if your a Rush fan your going to love this dvd, if your a casual fan this would be a great one to buy as songs from all the eras of Rush are represented here. If your not a Rush fan but maybe curious what all the hype is about check this out it's a great catching up point. 5 star rating and yes Rush still rocks hard after all these years! Thanks for reading.
