Movie Reviews of Quigley Down Under

Movie Review: Tom Selleck surprised me
Summary: 5 Stars

I saw a movie that featured a man whose last name was Quigley, and he used a Sharp's 50 cal to make some pretty long shots while being chased by the law. (I don't remember the name of the movie, but wish I knew what it was.)
When Quigley Down Under came out, I was excited, because I thought I was going to see the continuation of the movie I liked. Then I saw it featured Tom Selleck, and I thought "This ain't Las Vegas, and it ain't Magnum, P.I.", so how was it going to be a good movie? Tom Selleck can't make westerns!!
Boy, was that wrong. This is one of Tom's Selleck's best movies, and very well done. I've seen it three or five (or maybe even seven) times, and I'd take the time to see it again!
An excellent, top-notched movie, ALMOST better then any of the Star Wars and Avatar movies!

Movie Review: A classic western - topsy turvey
Summary: 5 Stars

"This ain't no Winchester 74 and you aren't Jimmy Stewart" ... No, this is the Sharps 1874 and this is Tom Selleck... both great westerns where the rifle is as much a main character as the people and the vital supporting actor. Both are classic movies. What I really enjoy in Quigley is everything is upside down... where the good guys are the natives, the bad guys are the ranchers and cavalry, and the single shot buffalo gun is the equalizer... in the hands of a good shot.

The ending showdown is one of the greatest in westerns. For the first time viewer, let the moment flow... even in reruns it never gets old. The western lives on and the fight between good and evil .. in a foreign land ... is both timeless and universal... Wyoming is just a little north of Melbourne.

Movie Review: A frontier remote yet familiar
Summary: 5 Stars

I first saw this on premium cable and had to own a copy. The movie's portrayal of the versatility of the single-shot cartridge rifle was very welcome. ("I never said I didn't know how to shoot a pistol - I just never had much use for one." Great line in a great scene.) Laura San Giacomo was wonderful and Alan Rickman was perfect as Alan Rickman always is. I'm pretty sure the portrayals of the Australian aborigines was authentic, too. The story is pure Louis Lamour - it had me checking my collection for forgotten classics. (Lamour did not write this.) Basil Pouledoris composed a score that deserves a soundtrack album. This is one of those movies that are perfect for a sick day or a snow day - an all-time classic.

Movie Review: A Classic Western
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie is as close as they come to the westerns we all grew up with. Selleck is the closest thing to John Wayne and Gary Cooper and one of the few actors today who can still make you believe in the romance of the west. It's only a shame that Selleck has been overlooked by the major studios and relegated to making t.v. westerns. Selleck recently said in an interview that he would love to do another Quigley movie. I hope somebody wakes up soon and puts him back on the big screen where he belongs...riding tall in the saddle. Selleck's last big screen western, Quigley Down Under, is the kind of film that will stand the test of time as a truly fun movie and a terrific western.

Movie Review: A Quigley fan since it was first released
Summary: 5 Stars

Tom Selleck is outstanding as the American cowboy hired by Alan Rickman to come to Australia to help him with his aboriginal problems. Women will fall in love with Selleck's cool, tough, protective, and caring portrayal of Matthew Quigley. Men will want to be him. Rickman is a natural bad guy. Laura San Giacomo does the best acting of her life as Cora. I saw this movie when it was first released to VHS in the late 1980's. The day I returned the copy I'd rented, I bought a copy to keep. I have been recommending this movie ever since. One of my all time favorite movies. I hope that with its release to DVD it will get renewed interest and finally get the attention it deserves.
