Movie Reviews of Quigley Down Under

Movie Review: The American Wild West Meets The Aboriginal Dreamtime
Summary: 5 Stars

An American sharpshooter (Tom Selleck) with a powerful, experimental rifle takes to the high seas in the late 1800's and sails across the Pacific Ocean to Australia. His name is Matthew Quigley and he has been hired by Elliot Marston (Alan Rickman) to rid the wealthy landowner down under of the numerous packs of dingos (wild dogs) attacking his livestock. At Least that's what Quigley thinks he's being hired to do.

Shortly after arriving on this foreign shore Quigley learns the horrible truth about his assignment. The cruel and despotic Marston doesn't like Aborgines wandering through across his land and has decided to solve the problem by exterminating them. Quigley has been hired to carry out the job. His refusal to take the job marks the beginning of an epic battle between Marston and his men against Quigley as he fights to defend the indigenous population.

Action/Adventure in its truest tradition, with the lines clearly drawn between the forces of good and evil. You will find yourself rooting out loud for the "good guy" before the movie is through!

Along with the typical action sequences you expect to find in a good Western, there are also plenty of poignant and sad moments which center around both the plight of the aboriginal culture and the personal tragedy shared by Crazy Cora with Quigley in one of the most tender moments of the movie.

Great performances by all. Tom Selleck was born to play this role and anyone familiar with Alan Rickman knows that nobody is better at playing the "bad guy" than he is. And let's not forget Laura San Giacomo as Crazy Cora who supplies both the comic relief and eventual love interest of Matthew Quigley.

This was a tremendously original concept for a film which was carried out to perfection. This is not only one of my favorite Westerns, but one of my all-time favorite films.

Movie Review: Tom Selleck Westerns are authentic and action packed !!!
Summary: 5 Stars

Tom Selleck is one of the Best Hollywood cowboy since John Wayne. Selleck makes it his job to portray and with his asserted effort makes his western characters very believable.

In "Quigley Down Under" beautifully shot in Austrailia. Selleck plays an American sharpshooter (Matthew Quigley)who answers a want ad regarding the needs for a sharpshooter. Quigley's ability to shoot and hit accurately targets greater than 1000 yards is a very interesting twist to this 1850's Austrialian western.

In Summary: This movie provides all the "John Wayne ingredients". From the beginning brawl upon Quigley's arrival in FreeMantle to his departure with heroine sidekick (Laura San Giacomo) the story moves quickly and the action constant.

Quigley is hired by a villian ranch owner (Alan Rickman) to kill varmits which are cluttering his land who have learned to stay out of range of the conventional rifles. Quigley quickly demonstrates his ability to hit targets in access of 1000 yards with his special custom rifle and ammunition. He finds out quickly though the varmits are Aborigine's (the native Indian type people of Austrialia) and he protests and fights the owner. Overtaken and beaten by many ranch hands / gunfighters is cast in the Austrialian outback with crazy girl to die. With the best story line and heroic abilities survives and seeks vengence with the help of the Aborigines and the crazy girl.

A great action pack western beautifully photographed with a twist. Excessive violence PG-13 is the only precaution for the young observers.

Widescreen Anamorphic makes it outstanding for viewing on those widescreen HDTV's. A nice making of extra is included. The musical score adds to the enjoyment.

Tom Selleck is one of the great new Hollywood Cowboys. So buy this (a great value) and watch his other westerns they're great!!!

Movie Review: MATTHEW QUIGLEY IS A COWBOY HERO, AND CORA'S ROY!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is my favorite Tom Selleck movie! I just loved this movie so much! Tom Selleck (Matthew Quigley) is my handsome cowboy hero! Matthew Quigley travels from America to Austrialia to work on the Marston Ranch to hunt and kill wild, dangerous dogs(dingos). At least that is what he thought that he was hired for, but Marston (the ranch owner) had other plans! This is a very good outstanding western, with great shooting, and fight scenes!

Matthew also helps save, a very pretty american woman, named Cora, from being taken by Marston's men to be used as a[..]! Cora pretends that she is crazy so that the men will leave her alone, but she is quite taken with Matthew, but she insists his name is Roy! So Matthew for a while, thinks Cora is crazy too!

After Matthew finds out that Marston wants him to kill the native Aborigne people, instead of wild dogs, Matthew lets Marston know how he feels about it! Matthew says "NO" in a very special way! Then Matthew gets into big trouble, with all the odds against him, and Cora tries to defend Matthew from Marston's men. Beaten Matthew and Cora ,are taken to the desert, and left to die, by Marston orders!

But Marston underestimates Matthew! Matthew fights back, and then the Aborigne people, help save Matthew and Cora's life! Then Matthew and Cora fall in love! My favorite scene in the movie is where Cora is standing on the porch watching Matthew ride away! Awesome! I highly recommend this movie!

Movie Review: A classic yet, nontypical western favorite.
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a story of Quigley going to Australia to what he thinks is a job opportunity shooting dingos off a ranchers land, because he's possibly the best marksman in the world. Upon arriving to the ranch, he realizes he's actually been employed to kill the native aborigional people. In a not so polite way, his right hand refuses the job, is beaten by henchmen, and left in the outback to die with some hot but very crazy gal. He is then saved by the very native people he was hired to erradicate, and decides to make his way back to the ranch to stop the rancher and his goons from killing innocent people further. But the real gem of the movie lies in the way this simple story is told, the sound of his rifle, and the great dialogue comming from Tom Sellecks perfect performance.
I've watched this movie about 10 times. I know what's going to happen every minute of it. But somehow, I can't seem to grow tired of it. I love the look, the dialogue, the hero, the villains, that damn rifle/cannon he packs around, and Tom Selleck Blasting bad guys away from the next county with said rifle.
If you haven't seen this movie yet, you could be missing out on one of the greatest, yet nontypical westerns of all time in my opinion. I recommend watching this movie with a stereo that has a decent subwoofer, that way the crack and boom of the Sharps rifle he fires off throughout can be appreciated fully.

Movie Review: Me Mum Is From 'Oz, So She Should Know . . . .
Summary: 5 Stars

I never watched "Magnum P.I.," but in recent years Tom Selleck has made several VERY enjoyable Western-themed films. "Quigley Down Under" is one of these, even though it is set in Australia in the late 1870s.

I don't want to give away the plot, so the following description is deliberately sketchy. Selleck plays Matthew Quigley, an American cowboy and EXPERT rifleman who is hired by a powerful Australian rancher (played by the GREAT Alan Rickman) to get rid of a "problem" the latter is having with certain local sheep "predators." The plot is great; the dialogue is REALLY great; the scenery is great; and the acting is REALLY, REALLY great.

As to the last: Selleck's laconic Quigley Hero is the perfect counterpoint to Rickman's sneering Bad Guy. (Let's face it: Is there a better villain nowadays than Rickman? He's up there in the Basil Rathbone class.)

In a nutshell: If you like Great Westerns, buy Quigley. I got a copy for my mother, and she's from The Land Down Under.

One other thing: If you know firearms, you can tell that Selleck really knows what he is doing and is not some Hollywood jackass who would like as not shoot himself in the foot in Real Life. You see this in Selleck's other films -- including "Stone Cold" (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0009FU0ZQ/002-7513691-2418414?v=glance&n=130), which I also recommendly highly.
