Movie Reviews of Querelle

Movie Review: Very slow and very strange
Summary: 2 Stars

This movie is based on a homoerotic novel and so might not be suitable for general audiences. But even the most open-minded viewer will find this movie very slow and very difficult to watch. The homosexual iconography and imagery is over the top and a bit off-putting. The film was shot on a sparse set and the violence in the movie has such stylised choreography that the combined effect is very artificial. This film is a bit self-indulgent on Fassbinder's part. If you are interested in exploring the work of Fassbinder start anywhere else but here.

Movie Review: Hilariously Bad
Summary: 1 Stars

When I started watching this DVD I thought it was a parady because the acting and the writing was so bad. As it continued it became apparant that the movie was meant to be serious. The entire production is like a high school production written by someone who cannot write but who thinks that the disjointed, off-the-wall, dialoque makes it artistic.
The monolog that is interspersed between the hilariously bad acting is unbelievable. At one point, the woman who owns the cafe and who was having an affair with the main character's brother (Obviously not a very successful affair, as she is complaining about their sex life as he is on the bed masterbating in front of her). The woman has to be in her 60s and looks like she has been through the wringer. The monolog at this point in the movie is, "Her mind was clouded by the extreme, precise indescribable melting of these two muscular, sinewy bodies. She tried to force the soft, dissolving mass of her own sumptuous body between them". Meaning, the two brothers.

The main character has a fantastic body and that basically ends his contribution to the film. Most of the characters are not appealing physically and are older. Many look like dissapated patrons of a leather bar.

In referring to someone else in the movie the monolog goes, "But, thanks to Querelle, he would be adorned with a true murderer".
"For the first time he was going to meet another criminal, a murderer of his own stature with whom he would be able to talk business. Now in this abandoned prison Querelle was to meet a young fellow who had killed. The thought filled him with tenderness. The murderer was an awkward kid--a murderer for nothing. A fool!".

Movie Review: Wings Of Querelle? Little To Desire?
Summary: 1 Stars

These comments refer to the DVD edition. First of all and for the record, this flick was obviously filmed in English (!) as anyone who watches lip movements can readily detect. Of course, if you only saw it on VHS or a VHS derivative, you probably couldn't see any lips, much less lip movements.

This flick is so bad that it rapidly becomes a parody of a cheap porn flick without the porn part. HEALTH WARNING TO PROSPECTIVE VIEWERS: The ubiquitous voice-overs, presumably reflecting the deepest and innermost feelings of the particular character involved in a given scene, can send viewers into uncontrollable spasms of laughter! Just when one expects some profound reflection by a character on the current state of affairs (no pun intended) what emerges are increasingly banal sexual descriptions that, were they to be quoted here, would be canned by the censors along with the rest of this review. If you could somehow cross this flick's "thought-bubbles" with those in Wm. Wender's fatally dull and unimaginative "Wings Of Desire", you would have the instantaneous creation of not one, but two cult classics!

Wooden acting by Brad Davis and others makes this flick a parody. Stay away from this turkey unless you want to liven up a party with the X-rated unintended hilarity, where caustic comments by the audience can greatly add to the fun. A zero-star flick if ever there was one.

Movie Review: very poor DVD quality
Summary: 1 Stars

The film is great, but the DVD release doesn't do justice to it. Picture is ok, but not great. The sound is mono. Subtitles are only occasionally simultaneous with the action. This is really very annoying, at least if one wants to watch the film in its original French track, rather than the English dubbed version.
The quality is thus that of an Asian bootleg, except that the DVD costs four times as much!

Movie Review: What a Nightmare!
Summary: 1 Stars

I have heard about this movie for decades so decided since I enjoyed Brad Davis, I would give it a try. Boy, was I surprised! Watching this movie is similar to viewing an accident...you keep watching to see what will happen next. Trust me, nothing better happens. It was truly a waste of time and money in purchasing this film.
