Movie Review: Definitely worth a look...
Summary: 4 Stars
It's so odd to see Jennifer Saunders doing a non-comedy, but that's pretty much what Queen of the East is. While sporadically funny, this is really a drama with some sarcastic humor along the way and a few flashes of Jennifer's usual comic genius. The story concerns a fallen aristocratic woman and her adventures in the Middle East and is, mostly, captivating. While most viewers will prefer Jennifer's comic output to this, it's refreshing to see her try something new, and my reaction to her performance in this piece was one of pleasant surprise. Then again, I wasn't expecting something extraordinary, but Saunders manages to play things (mostly) "straight" with remarkable ease, something that isn't very surprising, after all, considering how well she assumes new and varied characters in the multitude of French & Saunders sketches she's been in through the years. This is definitely worthwhile if you're a fan of Jennifer's, or even if you just want an interesting little story in the form of a well-made period piece.
