Movie Reviews of Queen of Outer SpaceMovie Review: Peerless schlockfest of chauvinist kitsch Summary: 5 Stars
What if they made a science fiction movie that embodied every sexist cliché from the fifties that you can remember, along with some you probably forgot? What if a quartet of intrepid Earth astronauts crash-landed on Venus, only to find it populated entirely by bar hostesses in short skirts and high heels? What if all the Venusian men had been killed? Or banished? Or something? What if the absence of men to attract didn't stop the gals from developing lipstick, mascara, seamless hose, and gold lamé pumps? And ray guns? What if this all-babe civilization was so advanced that its chief scientist was ... Zsa Zsa Gabor? What if queen Laurie Mitchell, radiating a deliciously Freudian hostility to the male intruders, was so demented that she planned to destroy Earth by activating the Beta Disintegrator? And what if the Beta Disintegrator looked like a pasteboard privy under a pop-art parasol?
Well, there's more, much more, to say about Queen Of Outer Space ... but I won't be saying it. I'm already in a near stupor from kitsch overload - sort of the cinematic equivalent of a sugar high. The only cure is an emergency trip to the local cocktail lounge to knock back a couple quick ones. Maybe I'll try a beta disintegrator - very dry, with just a touch of soda. Preferably served by an alluring retro chick in a gauzy mini-frock and stiletto heels. Just hope she's not packing a ray gun ...
Movie Review: Pure Camp at its greatest! Thank you Laurie Mitchell!!!! Summary: 5 Stars
QOOS was made around the time was born. I have fond childhood memories of this movie, not as camp, but as a really scary movie. Now, of course, I see it for what it is: pure camp and great fun. Taken seriously one might think that it was one bad movie. It isn't. It is like an Andy Warhol painting. It captures a moment in time: 50's Sci-Fi as a spoof.
I have actually waited along time for this widescreen DVD release, which btw is fantastic - no complaints at all. However, I think the greatest feature is the commentary of Laurie Mitchell who plays the Queen, a thankless job since she has to wear a mask and makeup during the whole picture. But what a sweet Lady! I can not think of a more appropriate person to do this.
Another feature is that during the commentary some deleted scenes are enacted by Ms. Mitchell, and let me tell you, she is still great and can be terrifying in her role. Just perfect! Thank you Laurie!!! 5 stars.
Movie Review: #1 Rated Film of All Time Summary: 5 Stars
It was a show back east Million Dollar Movie on channel 9 that recycled the same movie each night and then 5 times on Saturday and Sunday. A lot of Abbot t and Costello, Loneliness of the long Distance Runner. "Stop watching that crap up there!" would yell our unsophisticated parents. None was better than Queen of Outer Space (QOOS), a 1958 look-ahead to 1984 when wise-cracking'
all male teams of astronauts would take off for Venus only to discover a masked, man-hating queen (not Zsa Zsa) and the queen's nemesis the beauteous
Chief Scientist Zsa Zsa seen cutting flowers in her lab. This film has hints of sex, leggy babes, the the tension of misogyny, interplanetary attacks and a good lesson in Vensian - "Botchino!" means get the hell going. And to you I say Botchino to go out and get your DVD of QOOS. I had
7 VHSs in case of an atomic war; now I must compulsively collect DVDS.
Movie Review: I Hate Her! I Hate That Qveen! Summary: 5 Stars
Actually the queen isn't really all bad. She's just frustrated because none of the Earthmen want to make out with her.
What a treat. A true camp classic that's really entertaining. You can't go wrong with corny dialog, mini skirt clad women running around the jungle in high heels and Zsa Zsa Gabor working in a research lab arranging dried flowers. Welcome to the world of Venus, the female planet, in the distant future year of 1985!
I don't know why it took so long for this to come to DVD, but it was well worth the wait. The print, aside from some faint color fluctuations in the last reel, looks pristine. Seeing it in the widescreen format is a completely different experience over the pan and scan versions I've encountered on television and VHS. The audio commentary is entertaining too. Now my only question is, when is the Broadway Musical coming?
Movie Review: Zsa-Zsa At Her Best! Summary: 5 Stars
Queen Of Outer Space is a top notch 1950's Sci-Fi B-Movie which stars Zsa-Zsa Gabor and Laurie Mitchell(from Missile To The Moon). The plot features a group of Earthmen who were traveling to a space station when their spaceship was crashed landed on Venus, instantly they were captured by a race of dominant Venusian Warrior Women under the order of their queen(Mitchell). The queen then reveals a devious plan to destroy the Earth, but her plans are stopped by the Earthmen and a rebel scientist(Gabor) and her friends who are against the queen. The audio commentaries by Mitchell and film historian Tom Weaver gives a lot of history of the film. This movie is perfect for Saturday afternoons and late-night viewing.
