Movie Reviews of Queen: Rock Montreal & Live Aid [Blu-ray]Movie Review: *Exciting* Concert! A Must For Rock *Fans*! Summary: 5 Stars
The QUEEN: ROCK MONTREAL & LIVE AID BLU-RAY is a fantastic movie that captures the dynamic energy that was created when Queen played in concert. I've seen the Live Aid set from Live Aid (4 Disc Set) and that was one of those seminal "live" performances that go down in rock history (next to Santana and Sly & The Family Stone at Woodstock and Janis Joplin at Monterey), which is included on this set as well.
Montreal's concert is just as great and this had much to do with the charismatic, flamboyant, and über talented front-man Freddie Mercury. Mercury sings, plays the guitar, piano, and microphone stand, and prances around the stage as he whips the crowd into a frenzy! He also goes through some minor costume changes, in true diva fashion, finally appearing in hot pants and bare feet. Gotta love Freddy!
The picture quality is outstanding and the camera work is excellent. Even on the "Live Aid" set, the picture is pretty sharp though it still exhibits the phenomenon of "microphany"(a term used to describe horizontal banding stripes that occur in parts of the film on certain cameras that were close-up during the UK performances in Live Aid) but that doesn't interfere with viewing pleasure.
Queen played tight on both concerts and Mercury was in fine voice belting out their hits and encouraging audience sing-a-longs.
Here's a run down of the extras:
* 25:11-minute -- LIVE AID SET --
includes performance of "Is This The World We Created" that was performed at night. i don't remember if this was included on the box set DVD of Live Aid, but it's a great performance as well.
* 10:56-minute -- LIVE AID REHEARSAL
behind the scenes footage of Queen rehearsing and an interview. it's funny because the reporter states that Queen is known for their "fantastic live performances with light shows, fancy props and backdrops etc.," and wonders "since they won't be able to do that at 'Live Aid,' will they have the same impact/success?" well, Queen more than proved that they didn't need any accoutrements to blow the audience away.
* 06:46-minute -- 1982 Interview from P.M. MAGAZINE
the picture quality is grainy and the volume is low, but it's cool to see this old show. this is basically a profile of the band and an intro to each member.
The BLU-RAY also comes with a small booklet with color photos and credits.
If you enjoy live rock concerts then this is definitely a must. You won't be disappointed and it's the next best thing to actually being there. I might also recommend Woodstock: 3 Days of Peace & Music Director's Cut (40th Anniversary Ultimate Collector's Edition with Amazon Exclusive Bonus Disc) and the aforementioned Live Aid (4 Disc Set), which are not only great concert movies but also documentaries on the probably the two biggest concerts of the last century.
Summary of Queen: Rock Montreal & Live Aid [Blu-ray]In November 1981, with "Under Pressure" topping the charts in the UK, Queen arrived in Montreal following dates in Japan and their record-breaking tour of Latin America. It was to be the only concert by Queen that was ever shot on film. Always a great live band, with arguably the greatest frontman of all time in Freddie Mercury, they excelled themselves with the cameras rolling. The picture has been digitally restored from the original film and the sound has been newly mixed and mastered for DTS Surround Sound and PCM Stereo from the original multitrack tapes.
