Movie Reviews of Purple NoonMovie Review: Catch Me If You Can... Summary: 5 Stars
....fans of the stories of master improvisionist Tom Ripley will truly love this inspired piece of French cinema filmed in the sixties. It shows no signs of being dated and no signs of those non-sequitur and dreaded foreign film edits that makes the viewer say, "What the heck does this mean?" When I saw it again recently on IFC, I was enthalled by the pacing of Tom's manueverings on the boat and the difficult dispatching of the good life gadabout Freddy from the apartment. The lead actor makes you feel as if the modern day Ripley would have been better served by Banderas, not Damon. Not necessarily to undercut Damon's performance, but this Ripley is more of a dark european which seems to fit better. Also there are snatches of everday goings about and faces in the crowd which give the movie a distinct flair. A warning though: if you can't handle english subtitles, this ain't for you. I found them not to be so much of a hinder, but some movie viewers may not.
Movie Review: MIDDAY SUN and just a touch of HEAT. Summary: 5 Stars
DELON's 'heat' that is - what a debut, and what eyes, face and smile! One almost wants him to get away with this one - and maybe he does ... he does have the gift of talking his way out of any situaiton, not so?FAR superior to the remake, this one is sundrenched, and peopled with lovely, boring, pointlessly babbling rich kids .... until our 'hero' is sent to bring this old schoolchum back home ... he likes what he sees, wants to be part of it - and tries his best to be. Can't blame him - the Victim somewhat deserves to be snuffed! It's amazing to see how comfortable Delon is with this role, and how easilyhe slips into 'the life' Beautifully paced movie with just the correct elements of suspense - will he ever get rid of that overweight victim? Or be crushed by the guy? Nice twist at the end too! Oh yes, Romy Schneider [long time amour of Delon] has a bit at the very start of the movie - before her career took of with "Bocaccio 70".
Movie Review: First class Mr Ripley Summary: 5 Stars
Overall this a superb take on Patricia Highsmith's Talented Mr Ripley. Its certainly a match, if not better than the more recent Anthony Mingella version.
The story is somewhat changed from the later film (I have not read the book) but like the later film this is riveting entertainment. Fast-paced and well directed, this moves along at great pace and you are continually torn between liking Ripley for his cleverness and wanting him to be caught.
I really only have two criticisms of the film. Firstly as a previous reviewer said at the end there is a big shock, which results in an ending to the film that I didn't like. Again as the previous reviewer said I can't elaborate on this without spoiling the film. Secondly I prefer John Malkovich as Ripley. See his performance in Ripleys Game. That said Ripleys Game is not as good a film as this one.
Highly recommended.
Movie Review: The Talented Mr Delon Summary: 5 Stars
Forget Matt Damon. Ladies, Alain Delon will crawl up your skin and send tingles where you want tingles to be and where you don't want them to be. Hard to explain the appeal of this film from 1960 but it is far more definitive and truer to the novel than johnny-come-lately versions. The Talented Mr Riply delivers a performance that defined his career up to 'Le Samourai' which defined 'cool' to several generations thereafter. Largely unknown in the USA, after some ill fated attempts at Holywood movies in the late sixties, Delon is one of France's biggest stars. He and Jean-Paul Belmondo were the Redford and Newman of their generation. His looks work to his advantage here but his eyes offer a depth of hunger, greed, and avarice that few actors could have pulled off encased in all that male beauty. An excellent movie for contemplating just how far you'd go to have someone else's wealth and life.
Movie Review: First Rate Summary: 5 Stars
I saw this film, about ten years ago and mainly because I had read a review stating that Martin Scorsese had hailed this film as a masterpiece.I wasn't disappointed. The pace the locales and Alain Delon's great acting make this film a cut above the rest.
In defense to The Talented Mr. Ripley, seeing that other reviewers have sort of panned it in comparison to this film, I found The Talented Mr. Ripley equally great. As a matter of fact when I first saw Purple Noon I kept thinking That Ripley had to have some sexual attraction to Greenleaf although the film does not show it.Then I saw TTMR and read some information on the actual book and I was like "I knew it!"
Basically both films are about the same thing, wanting to be something you're not. As Matt Damon said in TTMR "I would rather be a fake somebody than a real nobody" sad but to the point.
