Movie Reviews of Pure 80's: The DVDMovie Review: The decades best videos Summary: 5 Stars
I loved 80's music and it's videos, so this was a fantastic find!
Movie Review: Good, but not Great.... Summary: 4 Stars
The price of this "Pure 80's The DVD" collection seems to change now and then. I bought it when it was on sale(?) for 10 bucks(which is what it is worth imo), but most of the time it's listed as closer to 20. Depending on how much you like this track/video selection should determine if you're willing to fork over the higher price. But for around 10, i'd buy it again no question. Of course, most of these songs are overplayed and on way too many cd compilations(doesn't help that Tear for Fears has two in this dvd). But judged on their own merits, they are great songs and they were popular for a reason. And yes, most of the videos are amateurish and corny, but that's pointing out the obvious and it still doesn't detract from the overall charm or nostalgia factor of seeing these again. Plus, all the videos feature the artist in some way; a great visual lirary of them if you will.
Most of these are considered New Wave songs, so Dan Hartman, Asia, and especially Night Ranger stick out like a sore thumb. They're not bad in any way, but they don't seem to fit with the others at all. Btw, my vote for best video on the dvd goes to ABC's The Look of Love. It's borderline embarrasing, yet very enjoyable and just reeks of 80's New Wave. Worst video? Arguably Animotion's Obsession video. It IS embarrasing, and looks like a salute to 80's porno films(so i guess it's not completely terrible). Overall, I recommend you buy this if you enjoy this type of 80's music. And if a volume 2 ever comes out(fat chance), perhaps they could include Adam Ant, Pet Shop Boys, Duran Duran, Depeche Mode, JoBoxers, Art of Noise, Haircut 100, INXS, M, Musical Youth, Flock of Seagulls, Nitzer Ebb, Peter Schilling, Falco, Men Without Hats, The Fixx, etc videos.
Movie Review: Fair compilation; good value for your money Summary: 4 Stars
This music video compilation is a must have for any 80's music fan. The main problem with most such video compilations out there these days is that they are too scanty. The average music video DVD contains like 5-7 songs at the most. Wouldn't you rather spend a few dollars more and get a disc which contains more good hits in one place? And this collection does exactly that. It puts (videos of) 14 of the 80's best hits in one place. Agreed, there is still a lot more space on a DVD to get three times as many videos, but this collection stands out compared to the other collections out there today. The other good thing is that there were a lot of one-hit-wonder bands back then that you cannot really find videos of now e.g. Dan Hartman or Berlin. You can easily get a DVD of Tears For Fears videos but not these other bands. Even if you could many people wouldn't buy them because they only had a few good songs to their credit. So it is great to get your hands on a DVD where you can find all these good numbers in one place. In a nutshell: there's room for improvement, but that shouldn't blind you to what it's worth and pass it over.
Movie Review: Very Good Summary: 4 Stars
Growing up in the 80's, I didn't realize how ludicrous and low-budgeted some of the music videos were until I watched this DVD. Regardless, I enjoyed every minute of it. The sound was crisp and clear and the picture quality was good although it varied depending on each video (some videos were grainy or soft). The menus are easy to navigate, with options to play the entire DVD, individual songs, or continuous play. On a couple of songs (Shout-Tears for Fears & No More Words-Berlin) the video wasn't in sync with the audio which was annoying at times. The choice of music videos could have been better considering everything that's out there, but if you're into collecting 80's music videos or want to watch something fun & simple this DVD is a must. Hopefully there will be additional volumes released in the near future.
Movie Review: Ehhh picture quality not the greatest Summary: 4 Stars
The picture quality is not very good. It's like watching the videos on an old VHS tape taped off of television. I've never seen a DVD in my DVD player look so not digital. The selection is okay, the DVD opens playing a small clip of the Tears for Fears song "Head Over Heels" even though that video isn't on the set--but fear not, two Tears for Fears videos are here. I bought this because I love the Level 42 video for "Something About You," and I figured this was my one shot to get it on DVD. Buy this if you just must have it, the price is a bit much for such a short little collection, this should really be in the $12.99 or less range.
