Movie Review: beware of flawed dvd!
Summary: 2 Stars

I'm sorry to say that I am among those who received two flawed dvd's of this opera. The dvd's were flawed in exactly the same place in the middle of act two, just before the poker scene. What a pity, because I had forgotten just how good this production was, and I will now go to any length to get a good copy. The production is beautiful, with a terrific set and costumes, beautifully directed and conducted. The singing, for the most part is quite good too. Barabara Daniels is simply the best Minnie on record or video. I have always loved the Tebaldi recording, even though she valiantly struggles for the exposed high notes. Nebblet is good, often very good on CD abd DVD, Zampieri, not a voice I like, with her acidous tone. Daniels is believable in every regard. She is physically beautiful, with a voice to match, which encompasses the difficulties of the role with ease. Her acting is natural, and at times profoundly moving. I wish we had more of her performances on disc to cherish! Domingo is in excellent form, equal to his earlier recording with Neblett. It is too bad that Milnes was on the downside of his notable career. While he looks the part to perfection, it is evident that he struggles vocally. I truly love this opera, and wanted to revisit it. Too bad I'm going to have to try my luck at finding an unflawed copy.
